Brookhaven National Laboratory
$75,000.00 - $85,000.00 / yr
United States, New York, Upton
20 Brookhaven Ave (Show on map)
Jun 25, 2026

This position is in the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate, within the Energy Storage Division. The capabilities of Energy Storage Division include deep knowledge of in situ and operando characterization of electrochemical energy storage processes from the material level to the systems level. The facilities include access to a humidity-controlled dryroom for fabrication, testing, and analysis of prototype batteries. The facility includes a state-of-the-art pouch cell fabrication line for generation of high quality, high precision and high capacity batteries in a commercially relevant form factor.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position involves design, investigation, and application testing of electrochemical energy storage systems (batteries) for varied use cases. Preparation and characterization of novel and emerging energy storage systems will be required. Elucidation of the functional operation of batteries under different operating environments will be a focus for the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments and analyze data in the field of chemistry.
  • Collect and analyze data describing structure-function relationships of battery materials, including synchrotron based X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy data.
  • Identify and implement electrochemical evaluation protocols for battery systems in operational environment, including use cases describing data storage and backup.
  • Participate in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations.
  • Participate in report writing for ongoing and funded research programs.
  • Development of standard operating procedures and ordering of supplies as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering completed by 6/1/2026.
  • Background in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science as demonstrated through publications.
  • Expertise in data collection and analysis of electrochemical systems via synchrotron x-ray methods including X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy for the characterization of materials, components, and operando methods for batteries.
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry or material transport properties.
  • Experience in non-aqueous batteries such as lithium or lithium ion batteries.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with electrochemical analysis such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cycling.
  • Experience in use and data interpretation of anode, cathode, or electrolyte materials analysis relevant to electrochemical study.
  • Experience in use and data interpretation of data relevant to electrochemical energy storage
  • Expertise in X-ray diffraction analysis and refinement methods.
  • Demonstrated scientific abilities through prior publications.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $75,000 - $85,000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
