Role Overview As the Director of Operations & Maintenance Facilities, you will guide our Architecture Business Group's strategy, delivery, and growth in the O&M facilities market with a focus on municipal, civic, federal or similar clients. In this role, you will collaborate closely with our O&M Facilities Business Class leadership and multidisciplinary design teams across the company to drive revenue, foster innovation, and advance best practices that keep our organization competitive. You will partner directly with clients across both public and private sectors-each with unique operations and maintenance facility needs-to develop solutions that address complex challenges and support high performing fleet operations. Your time will be dedicated to engaging with clients to deeply understand their operational requirements and leading internal coordination across design, planning, and business functions. You will help deliver O&M facility projects that are functional, sustainable, and strategically positioned for long term adaptability. This includes guiding teams through HDR's proven facility planning framework, spanning feasibility studies, site analysis and selection, conceptual design, equipment planning, and stakeholder engagement-ensuring our work enhances productivity, improves safety, and strengthens fleet resiliency for our clients. Key Responsibilities Business & Market Leadership * Develop annual business plans including strategies and tactics to grow our O&M facility practice across all regions. * Lead the expansion of services aligned with HDR's full-service approach, including programming, site analysis, master planning, conceptual design, equipment planning, and building systems engineering. * Analyze emerging marketplace trends-such as advancements in fleet technologies, sustainability, and electrification-to strategically position the organization for growth. Team & Capability Development * Collaborate with our O&M Facility Planning and local Civic Market Sector leadership teams to deliver all phases of O&M facility projects, from early planning through architectural and engineering design. * Foster a culture of innovation consistent with industry leading O&M facility design standards, including those pioneered by HDR's facility planning experts. * Guide staff in understanding facility types, scopes, schedules, budgets, and best practice O&M design elements. Project & Operational Oversight * Provide leadership in operational planning, construction understanding, contracting strategy, and regulatory compliance. * Coordinate internal project workflows, ensuring alignment between client goals, design execution, and business outcomes. * Support integration of fleet focused planning considerations-such as workspace optimization, equipment layouts, and long-term facility adaptability-into project solutions. Client Engagement & Relationship Building * Maintain strong client relationships by effectively communicating design approaches, project constraints, and facility performance strategies. * Present solutions that reflect HDR's custom approach to O&M facilities, emphasizing functional efficiency, stakeholder engagement, safety, and sustainability. Who You Are * A leader with proven experience developing and executing growth strategies within operations, maintenance, and public sector facility markets. * Skilled in aligning planning, budgeting, forecasting, and business strategy into actionable plans that drive results. * Experienced in consulting environments or matrixed organizations supporting operational and public infrastructure. * Proficient in communicating ideas graphically and digitally using tools such as SketchUp, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite. Preferred Qualifications * Registered Architect. * Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience (municipal, transit, public works, fleet, utilities, or government), including 5+ years leading O&M or related facility programs. * Strong business acumen, including budget and staff management. * Strong technical and graphic design skills with the ability to translate operational needs into detailed facility documentation. * Ability to work proactively, multitask, and collaborate across teams and disciplines. * Understanding of equipment planning considerations for facilities that support large scale fleet operations. *LI-SA1
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture or closely related field
- A minimum of 12 years industry experience including leadership
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong skills in client management, client development and a documented history of growing/leading a practice
- Strong business skills; specifically handling budgets, staff and operational issues
- Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
