About the Job

General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position simulates and delivers a planned course of radiation therapy under the direction of a physician provides patient care and performs other support services. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the verification delivery and documentation of a prescribed course of proton radiation therapy to patients as prescribed per physician in accordance with generally accepted radiation therapy practices and departmental procedures. Explains procedures to patient and insures the clinical physical and psychological needs of the patients are met. Report signs of complications or other changes in status.
  • Provide and insure an environment of caring concern and support for patients family visitors medical staff and co-workers. Exhibits flexibility to meet the needs of the department and patients. Accurately maintains daily treatment records recording patient set-up instructions maintains accurate and up-to-date schedule. Ensures patient charges are accurately recorded.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills on assigned machine. Proactive in problem solving identifying and recommending areas for improvements. Ability and willingness to transition between machines effectively and with ease
  • Assists with orientation of new hires provides feedback to lead therapist. Acts as resource therapist for new hires. Works in coordination with lead therapists regarding radiation therapist manual updates.
  • Demonstrates professional judgment as to when to escalate issues or concerns to the lead therapist. Demonstrates the ability to discuss issues concerns and recommendations in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Follow the procedures of the Quality Assurance and Safety programs in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures and with the ACR and Joint Commission guidelines. Performs Simulator and Linear Accelerator radiation therapy equipment quality assurance checks detects and reports equipment malfunctions and does dose verifications.
  • Instructs supervises checks and evaluates all student work in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Receives calls from hospital staff patients and families regarding questions on treatment complications cancellations lateness. Schedules patients for treatment and maintains accurate up-to-date daily record of patient schedule. Participates and contributes ideas and suggestions in therapist meetings. Participates in staff meetings and continuing education meetings and programs.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree B.S. degree in Radiation Technology preferred

Experience

  • 3-4 years experience as a radiation therapy technologist preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ARRT certification required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic technical expertise required ability to organize set priorities and remain calm in extremely stressful or emergency situations.
