Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

As a Water Instrument Technician, you will be at the heart of our mission. Working under general supervision, you will apply your technical skills to install, maintain, and repair high-precision hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring instruments. The District operates a vast network of 400+ automated precipitation gages and several web cameras across Maricopa and surrounding counties, capturing real-time rainfall and streamflow data that's essential for public safety, emergency response, and flood management. We Require

  • Two years of electronic and radio telemetric or meteorological instrumentation experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/orjob-related experience may substitute for theminimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

We Also Value

  • Experience installing, maintaining, repairing, calibrating, and modifying electronic, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic sensory and control systems

  • Experience operating specialized electronic testing tools, diagnosing problems in sensory and control equipment, and recommending corrective action

  • Experience with meteorological data collection equipment and analysis

  • Skills in operating a personal computer, utilizing a variety of specialized software

Job Contributions

  • Performs routine maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic and radio telemetric hydrometeorological instrumentation, web cameras, and other supporting communication infrastructure, often in remote locations

  • Installs rain, water-level, and weather-measuring instrumentation in remote locations; installs conduit for sensor signal lines; calibrates the sensors; and performs maintenance on the instrumentation station exterior and grounds

  • Performs radio path verification and operates and maintains electronic test and calibration equipment

  • Uses personally assigned computers for diagnosing, programming, and testing equipment, and for record keeping of work performed to uphold organizational standards and regulatory requirements, promoting a culture of integrity and accountability across all tasks

  • Operate various tools, vehicles, and equipment, including drones and off-road vehicles, to access sites, collect data to support flood warning, maintain various meteorological instrumentation, and proactively collaborate with colleagues to develop innovative solutions that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Working Conditions

  • Position generally conducts business out in the field, utilizing various hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools, while also operating and maintaining electronic test and calibration equipment and personal computers for diagnosing, programming, testing, and record keeping

  • Familiarization with four-wheel drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to time

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments with exposure to wetness, humidity, respiratory hazards, noise, and vibration

  • Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County, and has the potential for General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily including, but not limited to, safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high visibility vests, eye protection, and durable pants such as jeans

  • Ability to climb up to 100 ft and hike up to 1 mile in remote areas, and exert 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly

  • Ability to obtain Basic First Aid and basic CPR certification, including Trauma, and AED Training within six months of hire
