Job Description

The Associate Director, IP and Licensing leads IP management and licensing activities for the campus and region.

Key Reponsibilties:

Patents

  • Lead the overall portfolio management of university IP This portfolio management is broad and covers all forms of IP and coordinating as the interface with internal and external counsel.
  • Collaborate with university personnel to pursue and protect IP. Identify S&T intellectual property to protect, promote and manage and determine the best process to accomplish this goal through provisional questionnaires and detailed descriptions/white papers. S&T intellectual property includes patents and licensing/equity copyright, and help to educate the faculty, staff and students about technology transfer opportunities and process.
  • Manage the IP Disclosure Process The IP Disclosure Process includes coordinating monthly provisional and nonprovisional committee meetings to ensure all pertinent information is included and good decisions are made as well as determining the agenda and sequence of teams to present.

Licenses

  • Grow royalty income generated through licensing activities including management of student employees to create licensing and marketing materials for IP. Lead outreach efforts to faculty, staff, students and others to identify and market opportunities; create systematic ways to reach important constituents with regular updates.
  • Identify commercialization partners to license technologies and negotiate license agreements (legal approval through UM Legal). Expand efforts to license promising inventions by improving marketing efforts, leveraging alumni resources and exploring creative business creation models. Identify commercialization partners to license technologies. Ongoing management of active license portfolio and financial payments.

Other Items

  • Manage other external agreements such as NDAs/CDAs, IIAs, MTAs, Cooperation agreements, Software disclosure/author's agreements, Engagement agreements, Copyright agreements, Master research agreements, Allocation of rights agreements, and other legal documents as the need arises including OSP support.
  • Management of IP related to Industry/University consortia including disclosures, licenses and options. Manage new consortia agreements.
  • Help to educate the faculty, staff and students about technology translation opportunities and processes through such programs as Founder Sessions and Summer Build and Launch Accelerator workshop seminars.
  • Participate in University of Missouri System Technology Transfer Director meetings.
  • Participate in University Research Center Director meetings.
  • Contributes to the overall success of Missouri University of Science & Technology by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience leading IP management, licensing, industry/university consortium agreements, and other agreements for campus and region.
  • Patent attorney/agent and certified licensing professional credentials.
  • Engineering or science degree.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $70,152-$100,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
