Scope of Position

Operates several types of heavy power construction equipment, such as large excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, move graded soil / materials for the installation of large pipe, tanks, steel, and all soil / structure related construction materials. Safely operate forklift for material handling, for site logistics. This may include offloading or loading trucks, positioning material for installation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate Forklift in a safe manner, understanding load capacities and terrain limitations.
  • Adjust hand wheels and levers, depresses pedals to drive machines and control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, and swing booms.
  • Controls levers and pedals on assigned equipment to lower bucket or scoop up material, and to lift, swing, or dump material.
  • Excavate for piping / structures including but not limited to, water, sewer and storm drain.
  • Excavate around existing utilities, structures safely and precisely.
  • Excavate to proper trench depths using construction drawings, levels, lasers, etc.
  • Install trench boxes safely and shoring at all depths required by individual tasks.
  • Communicate with hand signals to move construction materials.
  • Follow directions from onsite superintendent / supervisor.
  • Complete Haskell's daily trenching and excavation form and fully understand Haskell's Utility Strike Prevention program.
  • Complete and log daily inspections of all equipment
  • Execute equipment maintenance routines such as cleaning, greasing, fueling etc.
  • Use rigging and rigging best practices to unload, lower, raise etc. construction materials.
  • Travel as required.
  • Other duties which may be assigned as needed.

Education & Years of Experience

High school diploma required; minimum 4 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.

Qualifications

  • Must be certified to operate forklift and provide documentation prior to use.
  • Read and understand engineered drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of builder's levels and grade rods, rotating lasers and pipe lasers.
  • Judge distances and slopes accurately; and make decisions based on verifiable standards.
  • Knowledge of hand signals and able to relay hand signals effectively.
  • Certification in rigging.
  • Knowledge of excavation trenching & shoring best practices.
  • Act as a competent person for trenching & shoring.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers & supervisors.
  • OSHA 10 or 30.
  • Ability to understand & execute the company vision & values of Team, Excellence, Service & Trust.

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, team members may be required to visit alternate locations and therefore must have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to do so. This position requires the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The team member is frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
