Perquimans County is a scenic, rural county in northeastern North Carolina shaped by water, farmland, and strong community values. Bordered by the Perquimans River and near the Albemarle Sound, the county offers a unique blend of productive agricultural land and coastal ecosystems. Row crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and wheat dominate the landscape, alongside poultry operations, small livestock farms, and growing interest in local food systems and agritourism.
The county seat, Hertford, reflects the area's historic roots with a walkable downtown, waterfront views, and active civic organizations. The community is small but engaged, with strong school involvement, faith-based partnerships, and multigenerational farm families. With a population of just over 13,000 residents. Its rural character, agricultural foundation, and commitment to youth and family development create a meaningful setting for impactful Extension programming and community-based leadership.
