What to Expect

Tesla's Cathode Advanced Manufacturing Project team is looking for a highly motivated individual Project Engineer to support major capital project execution (>$100MM), commercializing novel Cathode Active Material manufacturing process technologies. This role will be critical for the successful delivery of Tesla's CAM (Cathode Active Material = "mitochondria" powerhouse of Lithium-Ion battery cells) initiatives, unlocking improved product performance and closing the battery material supply loop. This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination with major Tesla engineering disciplines including: Process and Controls/Automation design, Civil and Structural, Electrical, and Production Operations teams.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in project management and execution with a technical knowledge of chemical process manufacturing. You, as a Project Engineer, will drive projects from concept through install, integration, commissioning, production ramp, and handover to production operations.

What You'll Do
  • Define and drive tasks to be performed by the cross-functional design and supply teams - define project's scope, manage spend against the budget, coordinate with outside vendors, and oversee the installation of new equipment to ensure all design requirements are met
  • Work with Cathode Engineering, Factory Design, Quality, Operations, and other supporting functions to scope and drive designs for deployment of materials for production equipment
  • Develop scopes and define parameters from project design for implementation
  • Manage Vendor Relationships - Work with design team to create RFQs, manage suppliers during specification through installation phases, and lead factory/site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) for equipment
  • Coordinate internal and external engineering findings to de-risk plant design and optimize plant operations and availability
  • Track budget, equipment orders, and change-order logs
  • Define project specifications and procure necessary materials and resources for successful completion
  • Identify creative ways to overcome obstacles and meet the schedule despite setbacks

What You'll Bring
  • Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 1-5 years of experience in engineering and/or project management within process industries (e.g. refining, oil & gas, chemicals, recycling, cell manufacturing, industrial gases, or other minerals/metals processing)
  • Demonstrated experience managing capital projects (scope, schedule, vendors) from concept to completion
  • Working knowledge of stage-gate project delivery processes and E/P/C project lifecycle
  • A proactive, collaborative, and inclusive approach to problem-solving and decision-making
  • Proven ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple priorities simultaneously. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, occasionally requiring extended hours
  • Aptitude to learn and incorporate new technologies
  • Ability to identify issues and develop corrective measures to resolve
  • Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills
