Job Description

We have an opening for a Manufacturing Supervisor. You will manage daily technical leadership and administrative supervision of a manufacturing work center. The specific work center assignment will be decided after a selection has been made. You willbe responsible for work planning, setting priorities, assigning work, managing workforce and materials, and ensuring effective use of equipment and resources. You will perform personnel actions including hiring recommendations, performance appraisals, salary recommendations, promotions, and disciplinary matters. You will coordinate with management, technical staff, and project personnel to support programmatic and institutional needs while maintaining ES&H compliance. This position is in the Manufacturing Engineering Section of the Materials Engineering Division (MED).

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Provide direct supervision of a manufacturing work unit.
  • Plan, prioritize, and assign work to support schedules and operational objectives.
  • Manage workforce, equipment, materials, and budget resources effectively.
  • Provide technical leadership and resolve complex administrative and technical issues.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, training, career development, and personnel recommendations.
  • Support hiring, alignment, promotion, and disciplinary actions.
  • Interface with program, facility, and technical personnel to ensure work requirements are met.
  • Develop and implement strategic work center planning including quality and workflow processes, tools, equipment acquisition/repair/maintenance, workforce, and budgetary management for all area shops utilizing significant independent discretion.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with ES&H requirements and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret complex to highly complex administrative, technical, and budgetary information related to project objectives and translate them into project plans, job requirements, and work assignments.
  • Exercise independent discretion and judgment in managing multiple priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 390.2 level

  • Provide highly advanced technical and administrative expertise in manufacturing and industrial technology.
  • Develop approaches for planning, fabrication support, testing, and evaluation where complex problems require original solutions.
  • Represent the division or program in meetings and briefings, both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with senior management and technical personnel on significant operational issues.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Significant experience with manufacturing processes and operations including machining, dimensional inspection, welding, sheet metal, metal forming, laser cutting/welding, and plating.
  • Technical leadership skills and ability to work with and effectively lead a multidisciplinary team with a commitment to technical excellence, performance, quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and a significant level of independent discretion in high-consequence safety environment, solving complex to highly complex problems in a multi-tasked environment with minimal instruction and supervision.
  • Significant experience in project planning, budgeting, and workforce planning.
  • Effective written, verbal, presentation, and feedback communication skills in multiple technical areas required to supervise a team.

Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level

  • Highly advanced technical leadership skills and extensive experience leading and/or directing the technical work of others including developing schedules, determining technical support level requirements, managing and changing workloads and priorities, and performance and personnel management.
  • Extensive experience working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and experience working independently on a self-directed basis to provide broad, integrated engineering and materials solutions to best ensure programmatic and institutional needs are properly met.
  • Highly advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively explain, present, and advise all levels of personnel, senior managers, the scientific community, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Supervisory experience including performance and personnel management.
  • Advanced knowledge of LLNL's work control and integrated safety management processes and resources.
  • Familiar with MED's fabrication control system (COSMOS) relative to job planning, estimating, scheduling, and routing.

Pay Range

$137,790 - $204,216 Annually

$137,790 - $168,732 Annually for the 390.1 level

$166,740 - $204,216 Annually for the 390.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
