Ameresco has a current opening for an experienced Senior Building Automation Specialist to provide advanced technical leadership in the programming, implementation, commissioning, integration, and optimization of Direct Digital Control (DDC) and building automation systems. This position serves as a senior technical resource for building automation projects and works closely with project managers, engineers, technicians, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure control strategies are properly developed, integrated, commissioned, documented, and delivered in accordance with project requirements and specifications.

The Senior Building Automation Specialist is expected to independently analyze complex control-system challenges, provide technical direction, support project execution, and help ensure reliable, efficient, and high-performing building automation solutions.

Responsibilities

Lead DDC Control Strategy Development

  • Develop, review, program, and commission sophisticated DDC control strategies based on project requirements, specifications, sequences of operation, and established standards.
  • Utilize industry-standard programming methods, including Control Basic and function block diagrams.

Provide Senior-Level Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a senior technical resource to project managers, engineers, technicians, and other team members.
  • Provide guidance on programming, controls architecture, system integration, troubleshooting, and resolution of complex technical issues.

System Integration

  • Lead and support the integration of DDC systems with HVAC, lighting, security, energy management, and other building systems.
  • Ensure reliable communication and coordinated operation across integrated systems.

Programming, Testing, and Commissioning

  • Develop, test, troubleshoot, and validate DDC controller programs.
  • Lead or support system commissioning activities, identify deficiencies, and implement corrective actions to ensure systems perform in accordance with project requirements.

System Diagnostics and Optimization

  • Analyze system operation and performance data to identify control deficiencies, reliability concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Implement programming and control adjustments that improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, system reliability, and overall building performance.

Project Coordination and Technical Support

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, technicians, clients, and other stakeholders throughout project execution.
  • Provide technical input during project planning and execution and assist in resolving programming, integration, commissioning, and field-related challenges.

Documentation and Quality Assurance

  • Develop, review, and maintain detailed technical documentation, including control sequences, programming documentation, wiring diagrams, as-built drawings, system reports, and records of programming modifications.
  • Help ensure technical deliverables meet project requirements and quality expectations.

Client Training and Technical Support

  • Provide advanced technical training, system orientation, and ongoing support to clients, end users, and maintenance personnel.
  • Clearly communicate complex controls concepts and system functionality to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Independent Problem Solving

  • Independently diagnose complex DDC and building automation issues, determine root causes, develop corrective actions, and coordinate implementation when required.
  • Escalate issues appropriately while maintaining ownership through resolution,

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in DDC controls programming, building automation, or a related controls discipline, with demonstrated experience handling complex projects and technical challenges.
  • Advanced proficiency with DDC programming platforms commonly used in building automation, including Tridium Niagara, Siemens Talon, Distech, or comparable systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of building automation systems, including HVAC controls, lighting controls, energy management systems, and associated electrical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of industry communication standards and protocols, including BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Advanced experience with DDC programming software and tools, including the Niagara Framework, Tridium platforms, or comparable technologies.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex control-system and integration issues.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate system performance and determine effective technical solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical requirements, system operation, and recommended solutions to project teams, clients, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also providing technical leadership and support within a multidisciplinary project team.
