Description

The Lactation Specialist provides direct assistance to lactating patients and to the nurses responsible for patient care. S/he assumes independent responsibility and authority for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation/follow-up either by personal intervention or through delegation to team members. S/he individualizes patient care using age related concepts based on the unit population assigned for neonates (0-1 month), infants (1 month to age 1), toddlers (1-2 years), preschoolers (3-5 years), school age (6-12 years), adolescents (ages 13-17), early adult (ages 18-35), and middle adult (ages 36-65). S/he will participate in the development and implementation of programs for Women's & Children's Services as directed by Regional Director of Women's and Children's and the Clinical Nurse Manager for the FMC.

The job duties listed are essential functions of the position. However, other duties may be assigned, and may also be considered essential functions of the position.

The caregiver must be sufficiently fluent in the English language to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. The degree of fluency required will vary depending upon the nature of the position.

For direct patient care roles: Performs and maintains currency of essential competencies as required by specific area of hire and populations served.



  • Provides direct assistance to lactating patients and to the nurses responsible for patient care. Assumes independent responsibility and authority for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation/follow-up either by personal intervention or through delegation to team members.
  • Individualizes patient care using age related concepts based on the unit population assigned for neonates (0-1 month), infants (1 month to age 1), toddlers (1-2 years), preschoolers (3-5 years), school age (6-12 years), adolescents (ages 13-17), early adult (ages 18-35), and middle adult (ages 36-65). S/he will participate in the development and implementation of programs for Women's & Children's Services as directed by Regional Director of Women's and Children's and the Clinical Nurse Manager for the FMC.
  • Identifies and responds to customer needs during initial and ongoing interactions and clarifies customer's expectations.
  • Orients customer to environment, what they can anticipate and how to get questions answered.
  • Uses conflict management skills when dealing with dissatisfied customers (taking responsibility, effective communication, identifying the real problem and seeking mutual commitment, identifying solutions and an action plan).
  • Updates customers about our progress and any anticipated delays in meeting their needs.
  • Offers apologies/alternatives to customers when we cannot meet their needs or they encounter delays.
  • Uses the Service Recovery Policy when indicated.
  • Listens to the perspective of the customer and responds promptly in a respectful manner.
  • Responds to customer cultural/religious beliefs by identifying what is problematic for the customer and what accommodations are possible.
  • Does not project personal ethical values/beliefs on others.
  • Addresses customers in a pleasant, courteous, and respectful manner, and calls them by name, whenever possible.
  • Introduces self/title to customer, presents purpose of interaction.


Required Qualifications:



  • Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Required upon hire: Montana Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)
  • Required upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association (Vendor Managed)
  • Required upon hire: Certification as a Lactation Consultant
  • At least 3 years of experience working as a Lactation Consultant
