Job Summary The Water Treatment Technician II serves as the Certified Operator of Record for the wastewater treatment plant, ensuring continuous compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements. This role performs advanced operational, laboratory, and process control tasks, leads troubleshooting and optimization efforts, and oversees preventive maintenance for wastewater and fire protection systems. Acting as the lead operator, the Technician provides guidance, mentoring, and validation of documentation prepared by other technicians, while also serving as a subject matter expert during audits, inspections, and agency communications. The position supports broader Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs through training, incident response, data reporting, and actively drives continuous improvement initiatives. Independent judgment, technical expertise, and accountability are critical to maintaining permit compliance and supporting organizational sustainability goals under the direction of the Manager, ISO Systems & Sustainability.

1st Shift is 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday w/on-call weekend availability as necessary

Hourly Range: $23.45-$35/hour

Final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to experience level, education, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Certified Operator of Record for the wastewater treatment plants, ensuring all processes comply with state and federal permit requirements.
  • Perform complex operational tasks including advanced sampling, laboratory testing, and process / mechanical adjustments to maintain compliance.
  • Act as the lead operator on shift, ensuring systems function properly, troubleshooting potential issues, and escalating as necessary.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize plant performance (e.g., chemical usage, energy efficiency, sludge reduction, automation).
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and training to other technician(s) to develop technical skills in sampling, laboratory testing, regulatory compliance, and plant operations.
  • Review and validate data and documentation prepared by other technician(s) prior to submission, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare, maintain, and validate state-mandated documentation, daily logs, compliance records, and regulatory reports related to wastewater and fire protection systems.
  • Perform and oversee preventive maintenance, equipment adjustments, and repairs for wastewater treatment plants and plant-wide fire protection systems.
  • Coordinate with off-site laboratories and regulatory agencies, serving as subject matter expert during inspections, audits, and inquiries.
  • Participate in and, when appropriate, lead investigations of non-compliance events, preparing documentation, supplying operational data, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Support broader Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) initiatives, including inspections, audits, corrective actions, employee training, spill response, stormwater, and waste management programs.
  • Evaluate waste streams for proper handling and compliance with wastewater and environmental regulations.
  • Stay current with emerging regulatory requirements and assist the EHS Manager in preparing for changes impacting wastewater operations.
  • Communicate with government agencies (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DEC, DOT) as requested.
  • Must be trained and qualified in PPE for confined space entries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements:

  • Operator Certification required.
  • High school diploma/GED or higher.
  • 3-5 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations required.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DEC regulations.
  • Must be available for call-in response to plant or compliance emergencies outside of regular hours.
  • Must be knowledgeable in WWTP laboratory procedures and testing methods.
  • Experience managing projects or leading continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Leadership/mentorship/training experience.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance, good troubleshooting/problem solving skills.
  • Adaptive, cooperative attitude.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
