Trilogy federal is seeking candidates for a new Human Factors Engineer (HFE) opportunity for a large federal customer. The HFE will apply human factors engineering, human-centered design, and usability principles to evaluate and improve healthcare information systems, clinical workflows, processes, and user interactions. The HFE assesses user needs and system performance, conducts human factors and usability analyses, and translates findings into actionable recommendations that improve usability, safety, efficiency, and end-user effectiveness. The role supports EHR workflow stabilization and optimization, field usability activities, and Go-Live/Post Go-Live operations; documents findings, risks, and recommendations; and collaborates with clinical, informatics, and technical teams. The HFE must understand applicable human factors standards and demonstrate knowledge of SAFe Lean-Agile principles and practice.

Please note, this position is contingent upon award (estimated August/September 2026). Additionally, this role if awarded is on a 9-month contract in which we are hopeful for an extension or additional work, but it may be only 9 months. Travel is listed as a possibility by our federal customer (short duration and small travel teams out of a much larger program).


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Conduct human factors, usability, and workflow assessments of healthcare information systems, clinical processes, and EHR workflows.





  • Apply human-centered design and human factors principles to identify usability, safety, efficiency, and user experience issues and recommend improvements.





  • Perform workflow analysis, task analysis, usability testing, user observation, interviews, and other appropriate evaluation methods.





  • Facilitate user demonstrations and feedback sessions and translate findings into actionable recommendations.





  • Support EHR Go-Live, Post Go-Live, workflow stabilization, end-user optimization, and field usability activities.





  • Document assessment findings, risks, recommendations, and improvement strategies and communicate results to clinical, informatics, and technical stakeholders.





  • Apply applicable human factors, usability, accessibility, and human systems standards and best practices.





  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and apply SAFe Lean-Agile principles to support iterative improvement and end-user needs.



Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Human Factors Engineering, Psychology, Human Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Ergonomics, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.





  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in human factors engineering, usability, human-centered design, human systems integration, or a related discipline.





  • Experience evaluating systems, products, processes, or workflows for usability, human performance, safety, and user effectiveness.





  • Experience conducting human factors or usability analyses and translating user needs and findings into actionable recommendations.





  • Knowledge of applicable human factors, usability, accessibility, and human-centered design standards and practices.





  • Understanding of SAFe Lean-Agile principles and experience working with Agile or multidisciplinary teams.





  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.





  • Ability to satisfy applicable Federal and VA personnel security, privacy, and information security requirements.





  • Potential travel is anticipated; must be able to support potential travel.



  • The ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience supporting healthcare, clinical informatics, health IT, or EHR environments.





  • Experience with EHR Go-Live, Post Go-Live stabilization, workflow optimization, or end-user usability activities.





  • Experience with Oracle Health/Cerner Millennium, VA VistA/CPRS, or similar enterprise EHR platforms.





  • Familiarity with clinical workflow analysis, patient safety, clinical decision support, and healthcare interoperability.





  • Experience supporting VA, VHA, DoD, or other Federal healthcare organizations.





  • Professional certification or advanced training in human factors, ergonomics, usability, or human-centered design.
