Position Summary

The UNC Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, is seeking a part-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join the UNC Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Interdisciplinary Care Program. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing multidisciplinary program dedicated to improving the care and long-term outcomes of infants and children with BPD and other respiratory complications of prematurity.

The UNC BPD Program provides interdisciplinary care for medically complex infants and children with BPD across the continuum from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through childhood. The program brings together specialists from pediatric pulmonology, neonatology, cardiology, nutrition, developmental therapies, respiratory therapy, social work, and other disciplines to provide coordinated, evidence-based care. Through a recently funded program expansion, the team is developing a comprehensive outpatient interdisciplinary BPD program while expanding education, consultation, and outreach to healthcare partners across North Carolina.

The APP will serve as a key clinical member of the BPD team and will work closely with pediatric pulmonologists with expertise in BPD, with opportunities for mentorship and professional development in the care of infants and children with chronic lung disease of prematurity. The position will also support inpatient pulmonary consultation for children with BPD and participate in program development, care coordination, education, quality improvement, and outreach activities.

BPD Program Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include:

• Provide outpatient evaluation and longitudinal management of established infants and children with BPD and other respiratory complications of prematurity, in collaboration with pediatric pulmonologists.
• Participate in multidisciplinary BPD clinics, coordinating care with neonatology, cardiology, nutrition, developmental specialists, social work, respiratory therapy, and other disciplines.
• Assist with inpatient pediatric pulmonary consultation and longitudinal care planning for infants and children with BPD, including transition planning from the NICU to outpatient pulmonary care.
• Manage common BPD-related outpatient needs, including supplemental oxygen and respiratory equipment, respiratory medications, symptom management, diagnostic testing, and ongoing assessment of respiratory status.
• Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding BPD, respiratory therapies, home oxygen and equipment, medications, and anticipatory guidance.
• Participate in multidisciplinary BPD team meetings and contribute to development and implementation of standardized clinical pathways, protocols, and evidence-based care practices.
• Support quality improvement and program evaluation activities, including patient outcome tracking and development of the BPD patient registry.
• Participate in education and outreach activities for healthcare professionals within UNC and at collaborating hospitals and community practices across North Carolina.

About the UNC BPD Program

UNC Children's currently cares for more than 100 new infants with BPD each year and has developed an interdisciplinary inpatient BPD program for infants with moderate-to-severe lung disease. The program is now expanding to establish comprehensive interdisciplinary outpatient care, strengthen transitions from the NICU to home, and increase access to BPD expertise throughout North Carolina.

The BPD Interdisciplinary Care and Outreach Program is supported by a grant from The Duke Endowment and is designed to establish a sustainable model of coordinated BPD care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. The program is partnering with hospitals and healthcare professionals across North Carolina to expand access to BPD expertise, develop educational resources and standardized care practices, and improve long-term outcomes for children affected by prematurity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, etc.) in the state of North Carolina
• Prior experience in pediatric pulmonology, neonatology/NICU (including experience as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner), complex care, pediatric critical care, or the care of medically complex infants and children is preferred but not required.
• Interest in longitudinal care of infants and children with chronic lung disease and medical complexity.
• Strong communication and collaborative skills and an interest in interdisciplinary team-based care.

Interest in clinical program development, quality improvement, patient/family education, and/or community outreach is desirable.

Education Requirements:
* Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
* Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.
