General Description A Pipe/General Construction Laborer is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that typically performs duties related to general construction and/or pipe laying operations. This position works under the direct supervision and leadership of a leadman and/or foreman. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Trench excavation support - Dig trenches to required depth and alignment using hand tools or by assisting equipment operators.
- Assist with Grading and level trench bases - Use tampers, shovels, and hand tools to prepare bedding for pipe placement.
- Material handling - Lift, carry, stage, and organize pipe, fittings, gravel, shoring, and tools.
- Assist pipelayers - Hold, align, and position pipe sections; help set lasers, grade rods, and layout tools.
- Assist with Cutting and preparing pipe - Cut pipe to length using saws or small power tools; clean ends; apply cement, glue, or sealants.
- Assist with Setting of trench shoring and bedding - Assist equipment operator, and others in shoring boxes, trench plates, and bedding material to maintain safe excavation conditions.
- Backfill and cover pipe - Place soil or aggregate over installed pipe and compact as directed.
- Operate basic construction tools - Use hand tools, compactors, jackhammers, and small power tools safely and correctly.
- Site preparation and cleanup - Clear debris, install silt fence, maintain clean work areas, and pack up tools daily.
- Safety compliance - Follow OSHA rules, trench safety, confinedspace protocols, and company safety procedures.
- Other duties, as assigned.

- Strong verbal and physical communication skills, in order to communicate effectively with team.

- General construction tools, including hand and power.
- Basic understanding of underground utility/pipe construction methods.
- Basic understanding of grades, slopes and elevations.
- Reliability, show up on time, following instructions and maintain consistent productivity.
- Situational Awareness-recognize surroundings, hazards and equipment movement, as well as changing conditions.
- Physical Stamina, including ability to perform repetitive physical tasks.
Education and Experience. This position is an entry-level role and requires minimal experience in the asphalt industry.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Driver's license (preferred)
Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Pipe Laborer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Constant ability to walk at slow pace, on various walking surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, dirt and stone.
- Intermittent ability to stoop, bend, and crouch, in order to access various excavations and/or trenches.
- Intermittent physical dexterity to use hand and power tools; consisting of pushing/pulling and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Intermittent physical ability to use stairs, ladders and/or slopes to access various site locations.
- Frequent vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Frequent ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).
- Ability to wear, effectively, required personal protective equipment including but not limited to hard hat, reflective safety vests, safety toed boots, hearing protection, etc.
Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Pipe Laborer will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
- Work is performed outdoors, in various weather conditions; typically excluding below freezing temperatures
- Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, commonly found in road construction
- Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as, grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.
- Employee regularly works near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and near traffic.
