About This Position:

Highway Design Interns assist in the planning, design, and development of transportation infrastructure projects under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers. Interns apply engineering principles and industry standards to support the preparation of roadway alignments, profiles, cross sections, drainage designs, maintenance and protection of traffic plans, and technical reports. Responsibilities may include data collection and analysis, quantity calculations, plan production, and the use of engineering design software such as MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer. This work typically involves contributing to highway reconstruction, roadway widening, intersection improvements, complete streets projects, and other transportation improvement initiatives as part of multidisciplinary project teams.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Assist with the preparation of highway design plans, details, and construction documents under the supervision of experienced engineers.
  • Support roadway design tasks including alignments, profiles, cross sections, grading, drainage, and maintenance and protection of traffic plans.
  • Perform engineering calculations, quantity takeoffs, and basic technical analyses.
  • Collect, review, and organize field, traffic, and other project-related data.
  • Prepare drawings, exhibits, visual aids, and supporting documentation using engineering design software.
  • Assist with the development of project reports and cost estimates.
  • Participate in field visits, site investigations, and construction observations to support project development and delivery.
  • Attend project team meetings and coordinate with engineers, planners, surveyors, and other technical staff.
  • Assist with the preparation of permit applications and coordination documents as needed.
  • Support public involvement activities and attend client, agency, and public meetings when appropriate.
  • Perform other related engineering and administrative tasks as assigned in support of transportation projects.


Job Requirements:

Interest in transportation engineering, roadway design, highway reconstruction, and related infrastructure projects. Working towards a bachelor's or master's degree in related discipline such as civil engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or an approved equivalent. Self-motivated and strong work ethic. Strong organizational and communication skills required; ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Pay Range:

Albany, NY: $21.80/hour - $28/hour

Pay will be based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and position location.
