Posting Summary
The Rutgers University Marine Field Station ( RUMFS), a field facility of the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences ( DMCS), is seeking a temporary Marine Field Station Operations Manager to support Principal Investigators in the performance of complex experiments and research using a variety of advanced techniques.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Documents work performed, maintain research databases, and develop information and data for use in research papers and other scholarly materials.
  • Supervises long-term sampling programs and hourly staff at the Marine Field Station.
  • Schedules and/or performs maintenance of highly specialized equipment and ensure that laboratory and work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
  • Maintains wet laboratory operations in accordance with IACUC protocols and teach and train students and technicians in laboratory procedures, research methods, and the proper use of specialized equipment.
  • Schedules and tracks vessel and vehicle use and maintenance and serve as a point of contact for both internal and external constituents.

Salary Details $30 - $40 per hour

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in marine science, oceanography, ecology, environmental science, or a related field plus two years of experience with marine field research, laboratory operations, and data management, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Must be willing to complete the Motorboat Operator Instructor Training Course (MOITC) and subsequently provide training to Marine Field Station boat operators.
  • Must be willing to complete Rutgers University defensive driving training and Right-to-Know laboratory safety training.
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate small vessels and support vessel-based field operations.
  • Ability to supervise long-term sampling programs and hourly employees.
  • Familiarity with database management, research data collection, and record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of vessel scheduling, operations, and maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory and wet-lab areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition in accordance with IACUC protocols.
  • Ability to train and supervise students and technicians in laboratory and field procedures.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and manage multiple operational priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Small boat handling experience.
  • Safe boating certification.

Equipment Utilized
  • Forklift, small vessels and a variety of laboratory equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work is performed in laboratory, field station, vessel, and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to work in varying weather and environmental conditions and around marine and laboratory equipment.
  • Must be able to safely perform field and vessel-based activities associated with Marine Field Station operations.
  • May require work outside of normal daytime hours in the event of field station, vessel, or operational emergencies.
  • Must be able to perform duties that may involve standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying equipment, and working aboard small vessels.
