Job Title: Senior MS SQL Database Administrator

Location(s): Mechanicsville, VA

Job Summary
The SQL Server / Cloud DBA will join the Tolling Engineering and Operations Team to administer and support SQL Server and cloud databases. The role also includes help desk and application support responsibilities as part of a rotation with the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support SQL Server and cloud databases.
  • Monitor databases to maintain and ensure database uptime and availability.
  • Troubleshoot application/database issues related to connectivity, access, security, etc.
  • Tune long-running SQL.
  • Review and refine existing database tasks and processes to better align with team priorities.
  • Leverage and utilize O/S scripting utilities in support of database maintenance, diagnosis, and support.
  • Review existing database implementations and propose, execute, and/or direct necessary changes.
  • Perform SQL Server installations, including SQL Server 2022 and 2025+ with failover clustering.
  • Support SQL Server databases, including administration, support, and tuning.
  • Work with SQL clustering, mirroring, and high availability.
  • Work with large SQL databases.
  • Write Transact-SQL.
  • Install, upgrade, patch, and migrate SQL Server databases.
  • Work on a Windows platform.
  • Apply data modeling principles.
  • Work with Azure Cloud.
  • Support technologies including SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
  • Work with Engineering and Operations professionals.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Independently perform a variety of complicated tasks using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 6 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • At least 1 year of Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks experience. A certification is acceptable in lieu of experience.
  • Master's degree in computer science, information systems, or other applicable and/or equivalent skills, knowledge, and/or work history.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively using standard requirements and design artifacts.
  • Minimum 3-4 years of hands-on experience upgrading SQL Server tolling environments from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2019, including compatibility evaluations, Query Tuning Assistant, and Database Migration Assistant.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving deadlocks and blocking in production workloads, including Extended Events, Query Store, and wait statistic analysis.
  • Experience tuning Very Large Databases (2 TB+) including index optimization, long-running workload analysis, and minimizing resource contention.
  • Expertise working as a SQL Server DBA.
  • Expertise with SQL clustering, mirroring, and high availability.
  • Experience tuning SQL Server databases.
  • Expertise installing, upgrading, patching, and migrating SQL Server databases.
  • Experience working on a Windows platform.
  • Experience working with Azure Cloud.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SQL Server 2019+.
  • Experience with cloud databases, including Azure, Snowflake, and/or Databricks.
  • Exposure to SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.
  • Knowledge of data modeling principles.

Additional Requirements

  • Fingerprint-based background check required.
  • Contractor must continue education at their own expense to stay current with required technologies.
  • Candidates must physically reside within the United States for the duration of the assignment.
  • Offshore IT contractors are not permitted.
  • Candidate must be available for both webcam and in-person interviews.
