Henry W. Bloch School of Management

The Bloch School was founded in 1953 and endowed by Henry Bloch in 1986. Henry W. Bloch is the co-founder of tax empire H&R Block and is considered one of the world's greatest entrepreneurs. He is not only the Bloch School benefactor but also the role model for what we teach: he embodies the philosophy of working hard, generating wealth and success, and completing the continuum by giving back to the community through philanthropy and social entrepreneurship. The Bloch School of Management continues to benefit from the generous and steadfast support of the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation, which plays an important role in advancing the School's pursuit of excellence.

Undergraduate and graduate students can pursue degrees across five academic areas including Accountancy, Entrepreneurship and Management, Finance, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, and Public Affairs. The Bloch School of Management is the only school in the Kansas City region accredited by both AACSB and NASPAA. The Bloch School's business administration programs are accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), and the public administration programs are accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).

Job Description

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management. Given its distinguished academic foundation and an exceptional trajectory today, this is an extraordinary opportunity to bring a bold and innovative leader to the School at a pivotal moment in UMKC history. This search comes at a time of significant institutional momentum and offers the next dean an important opportunity to advance excellence in education, entrepreneurship, and innovation at UMKC, a dynamic urban research university with deep connections to the Kansas City community.

With UMKC's recent achievement of the Carnegie R1 designation, its partnership with the National Science Foundation to develop a critical materials crossroads with an estimated $40B economic impact on the region over the next decade, expanded academic programs and degree offerings and the recent launch of a comprehensive capital campaign, the time to join UMKC as a dean could not be better.

The Henry W. Bloch School of Management is home to a robust collection of academic programs and institutes that offer first-class educational experiences to our students-whether first time-to-college or executives. Guided by the priorities of the Bloch School Strategic Plan, the School offers tailored programming for well-defined career paths, hands-on learning opportunities with regional partners, and a network for accessing coveted positions. Bloch faculty and staff are deeply engaged in both teaching and scholarship, providing its students with rich experiential learning opportunities, including consulting, internships, and community-based projects. Academic innovation abounds with new programs being launched in the past two years, including a graduate certificate in Public Policy Analysis, two emphasis areas in the BBA (sports management, and risk management & insurance) and a STEM-designated MBA in Business Analytics.

Entrepreneurship is woven throughout the School and University, where it is reinforced in the Bloch Consulting Lab, the Levitt Social Entrepreneurship Challenge, the Regnier mentoring initiative, and the Regnier Venture Creation Challenge. UMKC is also home to KCSourceLink and the national Innovation Center, providing students and faculty opportunities to support business and economic development across the country.

Within the broader comprehensive University there are plenty of opportunities for collaboration, including the state-of-the-art Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise and Research Center, which provides world-class laboratories, maker spaces, and innovation studios coupled with exceptional equipment that provides students, faculty and industry alike with hands-on opportunities to innovate and discover.

Buoyed with a talented and dedicated team of faculty, staff, students and administrators, the next dean will have the opportunity to capitalize on the School's existing strengths to play a dynamic role in expanding corporate and non-profit partnerships and economic development through our region and state.

On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Its major Kansas suburbs include Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, and Kansas City, Kansas.

The city is composed of several neighborhoods, including the River Market District, 18th and Vine District, and Country Club Plaza. Celebrated cultural traditions include Kansas City jazz; theater, which was a historical center of the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit in the 1920s; the nickname City of Fountains; the Chiefs, Royals, Sporting Kansas City and Kansas City Current sports franchises; and cuisine such as Kansas City-style barbecue and strip steak.
