ROLE OVERVIEW:

Knife River has excellent opportunities for an Asphalt Paving Laborer. Our asphalt paving crews consist of the following - operation of pavers, screeds, rollers, distributors, as well as raking and shoveling of asphalt and other laboring duties.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)



  1. Operate heavy equipment related to asphalt paving.
  2. Place, shovel and rake materials with hand tools.
  3. Lift and carry tools and supplies.
  4. Control and guide machine to lay asphalt.
  5. Fill tanks or hoppers with paving materials.
  6. Light burners on machines and regulate screed temperatures.
  7. Spread and compact asphalt paving.
  8. Smooth out stone or concrete using special attachments.
  9. Ensure all machines are well-oiled, serviced, and inspected.
  10. Provide equipment cleanup as needed.
  11. Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact and finish road materials, according to specifications.
  12. Guide dump trucks to maintain flow of asphalt into hoppers.
  13. Guide operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
  14. Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
  15. Assist with flagging to direct motorists away from the work zone.
  16. Drive or attach machines onto tractor trailers.
  17. Other duties assigned as needed.

    1. Ability to travel to wherever the job is needed.
    2. Ability to work for long hours in all weather conditions.
    3. Ability to work as part of a team.
    4. Ability to work on weekends, public holidays, and at night.
    5. Ability to bend, stoop, lift, push, pull and be on your feet for long periods of time and perform physically demanding tasks.
    6. Knowledge of road and traffic regulations.
    7. Must have strong work ethic.
    8. Communication skills; Ability to communicate with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the general public in a courteous, professional manner at all times.
    9. Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
    10. Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, physical/functional exam and drug screen


    Minimum Qualifications:



    1. Proven work experience as a construction laborer is preferred.
    2. Experience with construction machinery is helpful.
    3. High school diploma or equivalent.
    4. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is preferred.
