IT accelerates the success of IDEXX employees and customers by providing scalable and innovative solutions and leadership. We are a global organization that supports all technology needed to deliver products and solutions to customers enabling them to focus on delivering high quality patient care. We strive to provide exceptional customer service and experience in the most efficient means possible, requiring alignment and cross-functional communication.

As a GenAI Developer Sr I, you will lead the architecture, design, and implementation of complex applications - including reports, n-tier web applications, and cloud-native solutions - using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, and set technical direction for incorporating modern generative AI capabilities across the organization.

The Enterprise Technology department builds the platforms and applications that power IDEXX's business, including next-generation applications that incorporate modern AI and generative AI capabilities. In this role, you'll own advanced RAG architecture, MCP and agent integration strategy, and prompt engineering and evaluation practices, while mentoring other engineers, championing secure and compliant development, and driving technical decisions on ambiguous, high-impact problems.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of complex applications - across frontend and backend, including reports, n-tier web applications, and cloud-native solutions - leveraging AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code to increase team velocity and quality.
  • Define and evangelize best practices, standards, and reusable patterns for using AI coding tools across the development organization.
  • Establish and lead adoption of spec-driven development practices - defining how engineering work is decomposed into clear specs and plans so it can be reliably chunked, sequenced, and orchestrated through AI coding agents such as Claude Code, rather than relying on ad hoc prompting.
  • Architect and lead implementation of advanced RAG solutions, including retrieval strategy, chunking, embeddings, and evaluation of retrieval quality across vector store technologies.
  • Design and oversee integration of MCP servers, tools, and other agent-enabling protocols across applications and internal microservices, evaluating new integrations for security, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Design and lead development of multi-step and multi-agent systems, establishing patterns for orchestration, tool use, and safety guardrails across frameworks such as LangChain/LangGraph, the Anthropic Agent SDK, and AutoGen/CrewAI.
  • Own advanced prompt engineering strategy, including prompt design, versioning, red-teaming, and human-in-the-loop review; help introduce automated evaluation frameworks (e.g., promptfoo, DeepEval) where none exist today.
  • Own observability and cost/token monitoring for AI features in production, establishing logging, tracing, and dashboards to track output quality, latency, and drift, and communicating cost tradeoffs to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Champion secure development and data privacy practices, ensuring AI integrations are reviewed for risks such as prompt injection and tool misuse, and maintaining working awareness of relevant compliance and responsible AI considerations (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA-adjacent requirements, export controls, fairness, and explainability).
  • Mentor GenAI Developer I and II engineers, lead design and code reviews, and elevate the team's overall technical capability.
  • Partner with product, architecture, and security teams to evaluate emerging GenAI technologies, models, and vendors, and make build-versus-adopt recommendations - maintaining awareness of the landscape even though vendor/model evaluation is not a primary duty.
  • Drive technical decision-making on complex, ambiguous problems with significant organizational impact, including production-readiness decisions around CI/CD, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
  • Lead Agile ceremonies and cross-functional collaboration with product and design; represent the team in architecture reviews, technology governance forums, and stakeholder/leadership presentations.

What You Will Need to Succeed:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5-7+ years of professional software development experience, including prior senior or lead responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated full-stack expertise across Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern web technologies.
  • Extensive hands-on AWS experience, with practical experience across Azure and/or GCP.
  • Deep experience with relational and NoSQL databases; practical experience with data warehousing/analytics platforms.
  • Proven track record architecting RAG solutions and vector-database-backed retrieval at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-agent system design using one or more orchestration frameworks (LangChain/LangGraph, Anthropic Agent SDK, AutoGen/CrewAI, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience applying spec-driven development practices to direct AI coding agents, including decomposing complex work into chunked, orchestrated plans and establishing this as a standard for a team.
  • Advanced prompt engineering experience, including designing evaluation methodologies, red-teaming, and human-in-the-loop review processes.
  • Strong understanding of secure development practices, data privacy principles, and AI-specific risk considerations.
  • Demonstrated mentorship, technical leadership, and stakeholder/leadership communication experience.

It would be a plus if you had any of these things...

  • Experience introducing automated LLM evaluation frameworks (e.g., promptfoo, DeepEval) in an organization where none previously existed.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks relevant to regulated industries (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA-adjacent requirements, export controls).
  • Experience evaluating and providing informed recommendations on emerging LLM models and vendors.
  • Cloud certification(s) in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Production experience with CI/CD, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code.
