Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as inaugural Associate Laboratory Director for its Innovation, Science, and Security (ISS) Directorate. Reporting directly to the Laboratory Director, the ALD for Innovation, Science and Security will provide strategic, scientific, and operational leadership for a diverse portfolio of fundamental and applied science and technology programs, national security programs and unique user facilities. The ALD will play a central role in advancing the Laboratory's mission and shaping its future scientific and technological direction.

Position Summary

The ALD, ISS will work closely with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and fellow Associate Laboratory Directors to advance BNL's priorities. As a member of the Directors' Council, the ALD will share responsibility for institutional performance, risk management, operational excellence and the Laboratory's overall science and technology strategy.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead and strategically grow the BNL's ISS Directorate, as well as steward and expand its user facilities.
  • Oversee relationships with ISS program sponsors within DOE as well as other agencies, ensuring that the science and technology programs are meeting client needs.
  • Strengthen existing research programs, develop new programs, and drive strategic initiatives for the organization. Emerging areas of opportunity are quantum networking and sensing, AI for grid applications, isotope R&D, fusion energy science and technology and national security.
  • Work with the Laboratory Director and Leadership Team to identify and implement strategic lab-wide or cross-cutting research opportunities.
  • Develop partnerships with other DOE national laboratories, academia and private sector aligned with BNL's Science Focus Areas and emerging opportunities.
  • Manage programmatic funds and discretionary investments for research and program development. Act as steward for laboratory operations, facilities, capital, and equipment. Direct line management responsibilities within ISS.
  • Maintain a strong safety culture and compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures as documented in the Lab's business management system.
  • Lead the drive towards operational excellence within the Directorate and, with the other ALDs, across the laboratory.
  • Implement management systems, operations, safety, security, and performance and reward programs.
  • Act as the primary ISS contact, representing the ISS Directorate on Lab-level committees, task forces, and working groups with a shared responsibility for the overall lab-wide science and technology strategy.
  • Identify staffing and other resource requirements. Support recruiting initiatives through fellowships and university relations. Promote educational outreach programs. Develop a succession plan for future leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • PhD in a relevant science or technology field with fifteen plus years (post PhD) of broadly related experience, inclusive of ten years of demonstrated management experience, including leading complex and multidisciplinary research programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing, and executing scientific strategy with engagement from critical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to simultaneous excellence in science and operations.
  • Strong communication and relationship-management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with program sponsors, clients, external partners, senior leaders and employees.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the mission, structure, and initiatives of the DOE Office of Science.
  • Knowledge of and ability to engage with relevant industry partners.
  • Active DOE Q clearance
