The Bio-solutions Portfolio Manager evaluates and optimizes the development and manufacturing processes of biological products, providing strategic recommendations to enhance efficiency, consistency, and profitability. This role guides technical product development, strengthens cross-functional collaboration, and ensures high-quality outputs across the biological threat detection product portfolio.
The position also supports corporate business development activities by identifying and developing new opportunities, engaging with potential customers, and providing technical leadership for proposal efforts.
This position is full-time and based in the Signature Science office in Charlottesville, VA or the National Capital Region.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Product Development & Technical Leadership
- Oversee the development of technical products that generate and analyze whole-genome sequencing data from pathogens and metagenomic samples.
- Design, plan, and coordinate the execution of biological experiments that generate high value data for troubleshooting, performance validation, and continuous product improvement.
- Research and develop enhancements to existing products by studying their components, identifying limitations, and implementing feature improvements.
- Analyze biological datasets, interpret results, and recommend refinements to research strategies, assays, or development workflows.
Production Optimization & Quality Management
- Identify opportunities to refine production processes with the goal of reducing variability, improving reliability, and minimizing quality control failure rates in biological threat detection products.
- Collaborate closely with production teams to ensure products are delivered at optimal quality, yield, and consistency.
- Support the creation and refinement of SOPs, documentation pipelines, and quality management protocols.
- Ensure adherence to relevant biosafety, regulatory, and quality standards throughout product development and manufacturing processes.
Strategic Planning & Portfolio Development
- Maintain a strategic roadmap for the biological products portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and evolving customer needs.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and scientific advancements to identify new product opportunities or areas for significant enhancement.
- Recommend resource allocation strategies to support high-impact projects, workflow scalability, and long-term portfolio growth.
- Develop ideas and concepts that result in white papers, proposals, presentations, and other materials that support business development and growth of the biological products portfolio.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
- Serve as a liaison between R&D, production, QA, and business development teams to coordinate scientific and operational priorities.
- Lead cross-disciplinary discussions to resolve technical challenges and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Translate complex scientific concepts into clear, actionable information for technical and non technical audiences.
- Prepare, communicate, and present technical information and recommendations to internal stakeholders and external partners.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a subject-matter expert for customer inquiries, product demonstrations, and technical workshops.
- Provide scientific input for proposal development and other business development opportunities.
- Offer post deployment technical guidance to customers using biological detection products or analytical tools
- Serve as a technical lead, write and review technical proposals.
- Meet with current and potential customers to understand needs, identify opportunities, and develop technical solutions responsive to those needs.
- Attend technical conferences, meetings, and trade shows to stay current with technology, understand customer and market needs, and pursue opportunities.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced proficiency in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate and integrate the latest biotechnological methods.
- Clear track record of successfully preparing scientific findings for publication or presentation.
- Experience preparing and writing technical proposals.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable information for diverse audiences.
- Proven experience designing and executing biological experiments, troubleshooting technical issues, and validating analytical methods.
- Proficiency in staying update-to-date on the latest technical advances in the pathogen detection field.
- Familiarity with established domain-specific open-source software and tools to manipulate and analyze genomic data.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a related biological science field.
- Experience managing and analyzing scientific teams involved in delivering solutions for managing, visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting genomic data.
- Experience with whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, or pathogen genomics, including data interpretation and pipeline workflows.
- This position requires that the candidate be willing and able to complete a successful background screening for security clearance. Candidates with a current security clearance will receive preference.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May train and supervise technical staff members as necessary to execute projects to completion.
Working Conditions/ Equipment:
- Ability to work in varying conditions, including traditional office environments with sedentary extended periods required for code development and testing.
