The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in Directing with an anticipated start date in late August 2027. Given the Department's commitment to both student and faculty success, we are confident that our new faculty member will find an intellectual and creative home at Tufts as well as an enthusiastic and engaged classroom environment. Responsibilities for this faculty position include: teaching the equivalent of six courses per year to be divided between classroom instruction and the regular direction of plays and/or musicals in the Department's mainstage season; mentoring undergraduate directors; advising majors and non-majors; and departmental and university service. Candidates should be prepared to teach Directing I, Directing 2, and additional courses in their areas of expertise. Additional areas of expertise that would be welcome include (but are not limited to): writing for performance, acting, digital media and performance, arts leadership, adaptation, and/or movement/physical theatre. Given our department's close relationship with the Film and Media Studies Program, we also welcome applications from candidates whose work extends beyond theatre direction to film, television, and new media. We are seeking a new colleague who is excited to work in a liberal arts setting with students who are passionate about many things and who are eager to combine their studies of theatre and performance with other pursuits. This is an academic year, benefited 2-year position and is renewable contingent upon performance. Assistant Teaching Professors at Tufts University are unionized, with the potential for long-term careers with promotional advancement within the Teaching Professor ranks. The successful candidate will hold the terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) in Directing or a related field, or equivalent significant professional experience. Experience teaching and/or mentoring college-level students is also required. All applications are submitted via Interfolio, at apply.interfolio.com/195140. Applicants should upload a cover letter, CV, a portfolio of representative work, and the names and contact information of three references. The cover letter should explain the candidate's interest in the position and describe past teaching and mentorship experience, inside or outside the university setting. We encourage candidates to speak to the ways in which they create inclusive classroom and rehearsal spaces in their teaching and mentoring practice. References will only be contacted for candidates who advance in the search. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2026, and continue until the position is filled. Zoom interviews are planned for mid-December and campus visits are planned for late January/early February. Please address any questions to Department Administrator Lindsey Cooke (lindsey.cooke@tufts.edu). Offers are contingent upon completion of a successful background check. | |
