The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a talented, highly motivated Assistant Research Scientist to join the multi-disciplinary laboratory of Dr. James Byrne. The Assistant Research Scientist will conduct highly technical and specialized scientific research at the interface of cancer biology, biomedical engineering, and materials science. Research projects involve the utilization of gas-entrapping materials to improve response to cancer therapy, as well as novel mRNA delivery to reduce cancer therapy-induced side effects on normal tissues. This position will independently secure funding; design and perform research experiments and theoretical investigations; analyze data, and disseminate research findings with primary emphasis to collaborations on investigations with other faculty researchers. Academic knowledge of cancer biology or associated field with a doctoral degree or equivalent professional degree is required as well as outstanding achievement and publications in the field of cancer biology. Position Responsibilities * Independently develop and conduct research focused on improving cancer therapy outcomes and reducing treatment-related side effects. * Design and perform research experiments involving gas-entrapping materials and their application to cancer therapy. * Develop and investigate novel mRNA delivery approaches to reduce cancer therapy-induced effects on normal tissues. * Conduct theoretical investigations and apply appropriate scientific methodologies to address research questions. * Analyze, interpret, and evaluate experimental and theoretical research data. * Independently identify and pursue opportunities to secure external research funding. * Prepare research findings for dissemination through scientific publications, presentations, and other scholarly activities. * Collaborate extensively with faculty researchers and contribute to interdisciplinary research projects. * Develop and maintain research collaborations that advance the laboratory's research objectives. * Stay current with relevant developments and emerging technologies in cancer biology, cancer therapeutics, drug/mRNA delivery, and related fields. * Contribute to the development of new research directions, methodologies, and approaches within the laboratory. Minimum Qualifications * Demonstrated academic knowledge and research experience in cancer biology or a related field. * Demonstrated experience designing and conducting independent research experiments. * Experience with data analysis, interpretation, and scientific problem-solving. * Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings through scientific publications, presentations, or other scholarly activities. * Record of scholarly achievement and peer-reviewed publications in cancer biology or a related field. * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty researchers and interdisciplinary research teams. Preferred Qualifications * Research experience related to cancer therapeutics, drug delivery, mRNA delivery, biomaterials, or related areas. * Experience investigating approaches to improve the effectiveness of cancer therapy or reduce treatment-related toxicity to normal tissues. * Experience with gas-entrapping materials or other novel biomaterials used in cancer research. * Experience developing or evaluating novel mRNA delivery systems. * Demonstrated experience developing research proposals or contributing to efforts to secure external research funding. * Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to disseminate complex scientific findings to both specialized and interdisciplinary audiences.
