Research Specialist - Dunn lab

A full-time Research Specialist position is available at the University of California, San Francisco (Mission Bay Campus), Department of Ophthalmology. The goal of the Dunn lab is to understand how visual information is parsed and processed in the retina and to determine how this information is perturbed in disease. The area of specialization entails colony maintenance, genotyping, experimental support, lab organization and management and provide technical assistance in research experiments. The candidate will handle mice and be familiar with or eager to learn molecular biology, cell biology, and imaging techniques. The Specialist will work closely with the principal investigator and other members of the laboratory and is expected to be familiar with a given procedure but must be highly motivated, willing to learn, and very attentive to details to benefit from instruction. The expectation is for the candidate to achieve independence in regular activities and maintain detailed records.

Required Qualifications:

• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or must have at least four years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization directly-related laboratory research experience in cell biology and neurobiology, or equivalent experience in confocal microscopy, fine dissection skills, and an eye for subtle differences in tissue, cell, and sub-cellular structure.
• Candidates must have organizational and collaborative skills, must be adaptable, reliable, and willing to learn and be a team player.
• Applicants must meet the required qualifications at the time of hire.
• Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Candidates with prior research/wet lab experience, and basic chemistry knowledge are preferred.
• Candidates with experience coding in Matlab, Python, and/or Unity.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
