Position description

Jones Lab - Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist (Lab Manager)

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE - Anatomy (UCSF Bakar Aging Research Institute)

Description

The Jones lab is seeking a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. Our lab's primary interest is in identifying conserved mechanisms that are involved in regulating stem cell behavior. To address such questions, we use Drosophila melanogaster, as well as mammalian intestinal tissue and 3D intestinal organoids, as model systems. Once mechanisms that regulate stem cell behavior are identified, we evaluate how these mechanisms are altered by organismal aging and chronic and acute changes in metabolism. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in understanding how dysregulation of stem cell behavior is linked to degenerative and/or age-onset disease. In addition to conducting their own project, the candidate will be expected to provide microscopy and computational support for ongoing projects. Therefore, it is expected that the candidate is highly organized and has excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate will also be expected to help in generation and maintenance of tools, perform biochemical and molecular biology techniques, and utilize confocal and super-resolution microscopy. Experience with Drosophila husbandry is an asset. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, and be involved in manuscript and grant writing, when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Associate rank.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of stem cell biology, developmental biology, and cell biology
  • Experience with computational approaches, including statistical analyses and programming
  • Experience with confocal and superresolution microscopy
  • Experience performing biochemical and moleculary biology techniques
  • Experience with Drosophila husbandry
  • Experience with Drosophila genetics -or- mammalian tissue culture or animal models
  • Skills in tissue dissections and molecular biology techniques, including working with DNA, protein (immunoprecipitation and Western blotting), RNA extraction, qPCR and qRT-PCR analysis, and standard biochemical assays
  • Experience in supervising graduate students or other trainees
  • Proficiency in writing grants and/or manuscripts is expected

We are seeking at least a 1-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.

Applicants must meet requirements by the time of appointment.
