Wittmann Lab - Junior/Assistant Specialist

School of Dentistry - Cell & Tissue Biology

Description

The Wittmann lab integrates fundamental cell biology with quantitative microscopy and synthetic biology to decipher mechanisms by which the cytoskeleton directs cell dynamics and morphogenesis in relation to cancer and neurodevelopmental disease. The overall purpose of this job is to support research operations in the Wittmann lab and to advance an independent project. Under direct supervision, duties of the Specialist will include but are not limited to: assisting lab personnel with ongoing projects, which will involve molecular, biochemical and cell biological experiments, maintaining mammalian cell culture including differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells, fluorescence microscopy, microfabrication and other techniques as instructed. The Specialist will also be expected to assist with ordering and organizing lab supplies, to maintain communication with support staff and lab personnel and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:



  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Familiarity with basic biomedical laboratory techniques.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior experience with mammalian and/or induced pluripotent stem cell culture.
  • Prior experience with molecular biology such as design and assembly of DNA constructs and/or genome editing.
  • Prior experience with live cell fluorescence microscopy.


We are seeking at least a 1-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300-$65,900.
