Position description

Junior or Assistant Specialist - Duan Lab

The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a Junior or Assistant Specialist. Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to engage in specialized research in the retina and the brain and to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.

The individual will be responsible for:



  • Manage transgenic mouse colonies, including breeding and genotyping.
  • Perform routine biochemical, molecular biology, and confocal microscopy experiments.
  • Design and execute studies in mouse models.
  • Generate and maintain primary cell cultures.
  • Perform data analysis, record keeping.
  • Participate in grant and manuscript writing.
  • Present findings at national and international meetings.
  • Mentor trainees as needed.


Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biological/biochemical science or related field or must have at least four years of research experience in a related field.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biological/biochemical science or related field or must have a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Hands-on experience working with rodents.
  • Proficiency in designing, executing, and analyzing in vivo experiments.
  • Experience with standard molecular and cell biology techniques including cell culture, western blotting, microscopy, PCR, genotyping, cloning.


Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $65,900.
