Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist - Per Diem

Perform cardiac diagnostic sonographic examinations, to record pertinent anatomical, pathological and functional data on patients and prepare test data for interpretation by physicians.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Prepare, on a daily basis, test data and distribute such to the appropriate physicians for interpretation.
  • Contact physicians regarding the outstanding status of reports, to maintain a turn-around of 24 hours.
  • Educate the patient, using age appropriate guidelines, before each procedure, in an understandable manner; regarding the diagnostic procedure that is to be performed using good customer services techniques.
  • Review the medical record, before each procedure, and validate the presence of a physician order.
  • Prepare patient and perform M-mode, 2-D echocardiogram and cardiac Doppler procedures within 24- hours of receipt of the request, utilizing age appropriate techniques.
  • Perform Stress echo diagnostics and transesophagheal echocardiograms, as prescribed.
  • Facilitate the training of the echo staff as preceptor, or assist the preceptor in the assurance of staff competency and job specific performance.
  • Prepare preliminary reports for echo studies, pending final reports, to improve patient care by decreasing response time for results.
  • Assist the cardiologists in the data evaluation and storage equipment, facilitating comparative studies to assess the patients current status.
  • Perform vascular studies, both venous and arterial, if cross-trained. These include, but are not limited to carotid, venous Doppler and arterial studies.
  • Perform all activities with a patient focused attitude and incorporate customer service in every aspect of related duties.
  • Coordinate the student intern program with the associated schools for diagnostic training. Evaluates students and maintains the appropriate records.
  • Cleans equipment between patients, and covers with proper linens.
  • Maintains and inventory level and orders supplies, as needed.
  • Assist in the compliance with laws and regulations, as set forth by the NJDOH, JCAHO and related professional associations.
  • Assume On-Call rotation for after-hours and weekend coverage.
  • Communicate with physician, regarding reports, pending studies and any critical result which requires intervention.
  • Maintain patient records, patient logs, and submit monthly statistics for the vascular section.
  • Schedule patients for diagnostic procedures and instruct outpatients on proper registration procedures.
  • Submits charges and credits as needed for completed or canceled procedures.
  • Performs PM on equipment and troubleshoots problems. Evaluates equipment for upgrade and replacement.
  • Complies with infection control and safety procedures.
  • Conducts QA/PI for the echocardiography studies.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • High School diploma and/or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Graduate of an approved Cardiovascular training program.
  • One year experience in all phases of echocardiography testing.
  • Telephone, copier, fax machine, computer, and printer operation.
  • Echocardiographic ultrasound machine, vascular ultrasound machine, PVR, various computer systems, PACS, wheelchairs, stretchers
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • Assume on-call as needed,
  • Strong basic medical knowledge, with emphasis on cardiac ultrasound and cardiology,
  • Good communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills,
  • Ability to work independently, capable of supervising and prioritizing in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to participate intra- and inter-departmental activities and perform in a team environment.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
Licenses and Certification Preferred:
  • RCT registered or eligible preferred.
