Description

GAI Consultants is looking for a Project Technical Specialist 2 to support our Power and Energy Engineering - Substation Group. This position has the ability to work fully remote or hybrid schedule based out of Homestead, PA; Lisle, IL; Overland Park, KS; or Jackson, MI. This person will support structural discipline projects for primarily utility clients.

This position executes structural engineering tasks, including working/coordinating with engineering/drafting staff, preparation and checking of calculations, drawing development, preparation of deliverables, schedule compliance, and budget tracking for assigned tasks. Project work includes new construction, modification of existing structures, condition assessment/rehabilitation, and feasibility studies.

Job Duties:



  • Designing of slab and deep foundations for substation equipment for line structures.
  • Perform structural analysis/design of steel, concrete, and masonry structures that that make up substation equipment and buildings.
  • Designing mat foundations for transformers including spread footings, drilled piers and steel piles. Large power transformers may include oil containment.
  • Rigid bus design and calculations.
  • Preparation of drawings and specifications per engineering standards and applicable codes, including reinforced concrete and structural steel complying with ACI and AISC standards.
  • Proposal preparation includes the scope and budget development and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Draft site reports, design narratives, meeting minutes, and project memorandums.
  • Collaborate with other structural engineers for QA/QC peer reviews and staff mentorship.
  • Independently conduct structural field condition assessments.
  • Performance of bid and construction phase services including responding to bidder questions, responding to Contractor Requests for Information, submittal reviews, site visits, and verifying change order documentation.
  • Perform engineering tasks for projects that are managed by other structural engineering leads.
  • Ability to work independently and direct/oversee engineering and drafting staff on a project basis.
  • Possess strong communication skills that will allow for a collaborative environment with other engineering disciplines.

  • Have the ability to lift 50 lbs., able to climb ladders, and work at heights over 25 ft.
  • Must be able to wear and work in Personal Protection Equipment including fall protection harness and respirator.
  • Physically capable of performing field visits to client sites to obtain photos, physical measurements, and view site conditions.


Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's or better in Civil Engineering or related field preferred
  • Minimum 12 years:

    • Experience with structural or heavy industrial structure design.
    • Experience with STAAD, RISA, and other related engineering software.
    • Familiar with AutoCAD, Revit, and other drafting software.
