Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist / Cytotechnologist is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population, and will also Interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, physicians, support staff, peers and other members of the hospital community. Will maintain a general knowledge of safe practices and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with those practices to insure the safety of all Laboratory personnel.

Using a microscope, a cytotechnologist will examine Gynecologic (GYN), Non-Gynecologic (NonGYN), and Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA's) cytology specimens to determine if a specimen is benign and/or malignant. Any abnormal findings are presented to the Pathologist and a final diagnosis is rendered. This information will permit therapeutic decisions and follow-up monitoring of the patient.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties may include but are not limited to:



  • Screen Cytology specimens (Gynecologic, Non-Gynecologic and (FNA's) to determine whether the cellular changes meet guidelines to necessitate referral to the Pathologist. Obtains patient history that would be relevant to the final cytologic diagnosis.
  • Schedule and attend FNA's (i.e.: Endoscopy, CAT scan, Ultrasound and Cancer Center, etc) to determine specimen adequacy.
  • Obtain patient history that would be relevant to the final cytologic diagnosis utilizing Copath, Cerner/Powerchart .
  • Process specimens for microscopic evaluation when needed (i.e. registration, ordering, accessioning and cytopreparation) according to established policies & procedures.
  • Participate in Quality Control and Quality Assurance.
  • Participate in Proficiency Testing and Continuing Education.



Qualifications

Required: You have received formal training from an accredited school of Cytotechnology. Have passed the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) registry exam (CT, ASCP). Candidate must be a registered Cytotechnologist with NYSED and have a NYSED license in Cytotechnology. Baccalaureate Degree.

Preferred: A minimum of two to five years of experience in Cytotechnology.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).


Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $66.30.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
