The Advanced Capabilities and Systems Group is an agile, innovative, multi-disciplinary team developing novel system and technology concepts that address the nation's critical security challenges. The group leverages focused analysis to understand solutions to defense and intelligence problems, and then develops the solutions in a fast cycle of experimentation and prototyping. Frequent engagements with government intelligence and military users connect the group to their unique missions and needs. Projects range from the analysis and prototyping of tactical military optics and radar systems, to investigation of novel communication, navigation, and autonomous systems. The multi-disciplinary team consists of talented technical staff with expertise in electromagnetics, optics, signal processing (communication, GPS), RF design, statistics, optimization, computer vision, machine learning, autonomous control, software engineering, and embedded systems.

Position Description

The Group is seeking applicants for the exciting opportunity to conduct rigorous and insightful systems analysis addressing critical technology gaps for the Department of Defense and intelligence community. This requires the development of physics and engineering-based models of these systems in various programming languages, often MATLAB but also including C++, Python, and others. Scenarios may be run in varied modeling and simulation capabilities such as Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM); Digital Integrated Air Defense System (DIADS); Suppressor; and Lincoln Laboratory-developed modeling capabilities.

The successful candidate will have the ability to understand a wide array of technologies related to autonomy, sensors, aircraft, satellites, communication systems, electronic warfare systems, and navigation. Applicants must have a broad knowledge of physics as it is often applied in a military or intelligence context, e.g. electromagnetic propagation and interaction with matter, aerodynamics, lasers, optics, etc. Previous experience or specific expertise in all of these areas is not necessary, but the candidate should have the technical background and aptitude sufficient to learn them.

Applicants should be adaptable to new problems that may be outside their formal training, and understand how these technologies integrate into a "big picture" solution. Activities involve systems analysis, data analysis, physics-based modeling, software simulation, and engineering design, while leading small technical teams. The position also requires candidates to distill their technical work into concise briefings suitable for a range of audiences from technical experts to senior leaders in the government.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. In lieu of a doctorate, a Masters in the above areas with a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience will be considered
  • An active Top Secret clearance or Secret clearance with a background investigation is highly desired
  • Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret level security clearance with compartmented program eligibility
