Assistant Professor of Classics

Davidson College

Nov 09, 2024

The Classics Department of Davidson College, a highly selective liberal arts college in North Carolina, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, beginning 1 July 2025. The Department seeks candidates who have expertise in Latin literature and are enthusiastic about sharing it with liberal arts college students. We are looking for candidates who are invested in language pedagogy, who can teach both Latin and Greek at all levels, who possess a willingness to experiment and grow as a teacher, and who are committed to inclusive teaching. A genuine interest in teaching across disciplinary lines (courses that would contribute to such programs as environmental studies, digital studies, or gender and sexuality studies) will also be welcomed. The annual teaching assignment will normally consist of three courses in Latin at various levels, one course in Greek, and one course taught in translation (sometimes a first-year writing course).

We expect the successful applicant to have the PhD in hand by 1 July 2025.

Applications must be submitted online at Davidson.edu/jobs and must include:

  • a cover letter addressing professional interests and aspirations pertaining to teaching and research, keeping in mind Davidson's institutional commitment to inclusive teaching
  • a curriculum vitae
  • a research statement describing current work and future plans
  • (unofficial) graduate and undergraduate transcripts
  • contact information for three references. (Letters of recommendation will be solicited later in the process.)

Applications completed by October 1, 2024 will receive full consideration. We anticipate conducting preliminary interviews by the end of the fall semester and campus interviews at the beginning of the spring semester.

For further information, email the chair of the department, Peter Krentz, at pekrentz@davidson.edu.
