Senior Mechanic

Position Summary:

Provides maintenance of the infrastructure systems; provides maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair services on all of the University's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Work Schedule: The schedule is Sunday 10 am - 6:30 pm; Monday through Thursday 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Understand equipment and its use;
  • Read and understand blueprints and schematic drawings;
  • Supervise shutdowns of selected utility systems to coordinate with maintenance and construction activities;
  • Perform service calls for occupants throughout the campus;
  • Oversee trainees and mechanics;
  • Perform daily inspections of utility systems in assigned areas of the campus;
  • Repair all A/C equipment including absorption and reciprocating equipment;
  • Repair BMS and pneumatic controls;
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.


Experience & Education Background:

  • High School and related Trade School diploma;
  • A minimum of 8 years of related experience;
  • NYC No. 6 Boiler Operator License;
  • CFC Universal Refrigeration Certification is required.
  • NYC Refrigeration Engineers license is preferred.


Skills & Competencies:

  • Capable of lifting, pushing, and carrying various heavy tools, equipment, and material;
  • Climb, balance, kneel, stoop, or crouch to gain access to pipes, valves, and equipment;
  • Ability to use hand and power tools;
  • Must adhere to operational safety rules and regulations as deemed by the University;
  • Must be able to follow directives and possess good communication skills and ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively;
  • Must be able to provide coverage on weekends and emergencies including severe weather emergencies;
  • Mechanical aptitude in servicing HVAC and building equipment;
  • Knowledge of proper and improper operation of heating and cooling systems/components;
  • Knowledge of chemical treatment procedures and testing;
  • Knowledge of boilers and associated equipment;
  • Ability to perform major planned maintenance on systems/components as well as operation/maintenance of various heating/cooling systems;
  • Ability to assume various specific assigned responsibilities for diagnostics, operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation of major heating/cooling system components;
  • Ability to direct and supervise major repair, renewal, and rehabilitation of heating and cooling system components;
  • Train lower-level grade personnel as assigned.


Salary Range:

Grade 5

New Hire rate: $41.82 and 1199 One Year of Service rate: $42.67
