Job Description - Director, Wholesale Marketing

Position Description

Responsible for the oversight of the Wholesale Marketing trading & scheduling operations for Tucson Electric Power (TEP), UNS Electric (UNSE), and UNS Gas (UNSG). Responsible for the management of complex power agreements, credit and risk management procedures and wholesale transmission planning requirements. Provides oversight in the development of the Company's procurement plans to ensure adequate, reliable energy supply at the lowest reasonable cost. Responsible for developing strategies related to power procurement, natural gas transportation, and wholesale sales opportunities. Has extensive knowledge in the understanding of wholesale power markets, natural gas pipeline operations and regional transmission operations that impact the Company's resource portfolios. Maintains strategic business relationships with wholesale market participants to effectively develop future power procurement and energy sale opportunities. Prepares and presents clear and complete reports and presentations of wholesale marketing activities for senior management, utility regulators and customers.

Position-Related Responsibilities



  • Leads strategic planning activities in Wholesale Marketing related to resource procurement, natural gas transportation and regional transmission operations to ensure the optimization of the Companies' supply-side resources.
  • Responsible for managing complex energy transaction agreements, long term natural gas transportation agreements, short-term hedging strategies, and fuel clause oversight for TEP, UNSE, and UNSG.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of natural gas and wholesale power markets and how changing federal and state energy policies may impact the Companies' resource portfolios.
  • The position requires strong analytical and computer modeling skills to perform analysis on fuel supply options, wholesale power transactions, and transmission resource decisions.
  • Requires a strong understanding of the Arizona Corporation Commission's regulatory processes related to the oversight of the Companies fuel recovery clauses and plans of administration.
  • Provides input into energy risk management policies for TEP, UNSE and UNSG.
  • Works with other departments in support of major company-wide efforts, such as rate cases, regulatory filings, asset purchases and financial restructuring.
  • Maintains contacts and communicates with other utilities, and outside stakeholders relating to matters that affect the Companies' supply-side procurement activities.
  • Evaluates scenarios that help position the Company to respond effectively to future business conditions while minimizing power supply risk and uncertainties.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate complex topics to senior management, utility regulators and customers.
  • Must develop a comprehensive understanding of the Companies' Purchased Power Fuel Adjustment Clause (PPFAC) for TEP and UNSE, as well as the Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) Rider for UNSG.
  • Stays up to date on Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance requirements.
  • Leads in the development and implementation efforts associated with the Company's participation in the California ISO (CAISO) Energy Imbalance Market (EIM).
  • Provide supervision and direction for Wholesale Marketing staff to meet department objectives.
  • Ensure that the Company's management principles, policies and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Assume fiduciary responsibility for operating the business and provide recommendations on cost improvement measures.
  • Ensure that the Performance Management program is administered uniformly and effectively.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • 10 or more years of relevant wholesale marketing, energy trading or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or related field(s), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have demonstrated utility business experience.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of economic and technical principles of electrical generation and transmission systems.
  • Must have strong quantitative, analytical, and computer skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of complex energy contracts.
  • Exhibits transparency in communication and values opinions of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead at all levels of the organization, with business acumen, risk taking and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to work under high pressure and in stressful situations while maintaining poise.
  • Keen ability to understand the environment and circumstances and navigate team to positive business outcomes.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented style and established ability to coach others for success aligned with company values and vision.
