Summary of Job Duties:The Resident Assistant (RA) is an UAMS student who lives on the residence hall floor to serve as the primary resource for emergency and after hours contact. The purpose of the RA position include weekend and after hours staffing of the housing office, building a positive community on their floor and within the hall, assisting residents with both personal and academic concerns, knowledge of and upholding University policy, and serving as a resource and/or liaison for the Residence Hall. Qualifications:
  • Student must be a UAMS student in one of the six UAMS colleges.

  • Student must live in Residence Hall.

  • Student must be available for employment for two semesters upon initial hire.

  • Student must not be employed in any other UAMS department or lab.

  • All employment positions within the Residence Hall are interrelated. Consequently, disciplinary action received while employed may impact your employment status with the University, including discharge.

  • Students are expected to place the position as one of their highest priorities. Employment and extracurricular involvement outside of the position must have the approval of the GSM. If employment is approved by the AD the student will receive confirmation of that approval in writing through email. Students may work no more than 20 hours per week. To work in excess of 20 hours per week requires specific approval in advance by the RA and GSM for the time-period involved.

  • Resident Assistants are issued a Sub-Master Key and loss or misuse of the key may be considered cause for termination of employment.

  • Resident Assistants are recognized by the University as strong role models for all Residence Hall students. In conjunction with this recognition, it is expected that RAs will present a positive attitude and example with regard to responsible behavior and responsible alcohol use.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Open and close Residence Hall, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and weekends, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

  • Carry pager after shift for emergencies and scheduled late check-ins.

  • Answer phone inquires and assist with hospital/campus directions and questions.

  • Assist with after hour emergencies.

  • Process students and guest checking in and out of the Residence Hall.

  • Ensure building is secure by walking each floor and stairwell to make sure all doors are locked and there are no safety hazards.

  • Become personally acquainted with each resident on his/her floor and build a rapport that will foster open communication.

  • Implement and encourage the development of a community spirit on his/her floor, including social, educational, recreational, and floor and hall council activities.

  • Host/facilitate at least two activities per semester.

  • Assist new students in their adaptation to University life.

  • Become a positive role model for residents.

  • Implement and support the use of community standards on your floor and in the hall.

  • Develop the capacity to listen and understand, and to be flexible and open minded in responding to student needs and concerns.

  • Assist individuals in finding solutions.

  • Maintain familiarity with the locations and operations of department, campus and organizations (e.g. Parking lot, ED West, ED II, Parking deck, Main Hospital, etc.) and make referrals when appropriate.

  • Assume duty responsibility according to the formal and/or informal hall schedule and carry pager as required.

  • Assist in opening and closing of the hall, check-in/out residents, Maestro, preparation of rosters, damage inventories, cooperation with Police Officers, Security staff, Physical Plant staff, and other duties as assigned.

  • Become familiar with fire safety equipment, ALL-Call system and assist with fire drill and tornados procedures on the floor.

  • Report all safety hazards and maintenance concerns. Assist as assigned in emergencies.

  • Provide continuous interaction and example which encourages students to act with reason, to assume responsibility for their actions, and to be consistently considerate of the rights and freedoms of others.

  • Adhere to the rules and regulations pertaining to student behavior and residence hall organizations and communicate them to residents.

  • Develop consistent methods of enforcing rules and regulations, and assist students in developing methods of self-enforcement.

  • Take appropriate action to protect the health, safety, and rights of residents.

  • Provide the Residence Hall staff with accurate and timely information concerning the environment of the floor via night log report, Maestro, meetings, and RA staff meetings.

  • Attend and participate in all training and RA meetings.

  • Develop and promote a positive working relationship with all Residence Hall staff and fellow RA's.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
