  • MA in TESOL, Second Language Acquisition, or related discipline
  • Working proficiency in an additional language other than English
  • Ability to work with both University and Community members (K-12 as well as Community organizations)

License/Certification Required
Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional working proficiency in Spanish
  • Experience working in community outreach
  • Experience teaching in higher education

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of the AppELS Institute will provide vision and leadership to support English language learners in Boone, Hickory, and the surrounding region. The AppELS director will oversee the development of a community-based English language program, including program and curriculum development, strategic planning, recruitment and marketing, and the development of policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Provide community-based ESL courses and collaborate with community partners to provide ESL classes to a diverse community of English learners at the Boone and Hickory campuses
  • Participate in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Culture's (Teaching English Speakers Other Languages) TESOL minor

    • Teach one course per year in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
    • Support service learning activities associated with community-based ESL courses offered by the AppELS program



  • Collaborate with community organizations and educators to inform the community on pathways to Higher Education
  • Hire, supervise, train and evaluate any instructional and support staff that may eventually be hired
  • Conduct meetings and workshops for communication and professional growth or arrange external professional development as needed
  • Create and implement strategic planning initiatives that align with the university, the College, and the department, and track initiatives
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure consistency in the delivery of all programs
  • Consult with relevant academic and campus administrative departments as needed
  • Collaborate with the College of Art and Sciences Counsel, Office of International Programs, and other relevant units as needed
