Role Description

The Fluid Systems Engineering team within the Mechanical Engineering group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering systems designs for electrolyte management, air and water delivery, and thermal cooling for Form Energy's energy storage system.

We're hiring a hands-on Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Fluid Systems Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to designing our utility-scale multi-day energy storage system by linking the engineering team in California to manufacturing in West Virginia at Form Factory 1. The focus of this role will be on the Electrolyte, Air, Water, and Thermal management systems, which are at the heart of Form's iron-air battery technology and critical to the system's successful operation.

You will participate in the product conceptual and detailed design, first-of-a-kind build activities, vendor engagement, and design for manufacturing. You can expect to work on various manufacturing efforts, working closely with a cross-functional team of mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineers to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production.

This role is based out of Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV. Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:
  • Lead the Fluid Systems engineering effort at Form Factory 1, working with manufacturing engineers and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production

  • Lead critical vendor engagements to support introduction of new parts and processes

  • Coordinate manufacturing trials, collect data, and analyze results during the introduction of new product designs

  • Design product hardware to support the manufacturing ramp

  • Collect and provide feedback to the broader engineering team related to Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, drawing accuracy, interface definition, and tolerance analysis

  • Champion for safety, especially in the development of new manufacturing processes

What you'll bring:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 8+ years of industry experience in mechanical design

  • Experience with first-principles design and experience optimizing designs for manufacturing and cost-down

  • Experience with working in a manufacturing environment and with contract manufacturing suppliers

  • Demonstrated experience with optimizing mechanical design, balance-of-plant systems, and interdisciplinary interfaces of fluid systems or airflow systems

  • Direct experience in product development within an early-stage environment, proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop

  • Prior experience in Energy Storage, Battery Systems, Renewable Energy, or Utility industry is a plus
