What You Will Do:

The Learning Support Specialist (Mathematics / Computer Science & Information Systems) plays a critical role in supporting NLU students by encouraging students to take an active role in their education and empowering them to become independent, lifelong learners. The primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of math, statistics, accounting, computer science & information systems, and other academic skills on the Chicago campus and online, ideally with some flexibility to work one day a week at the Wheeling campus. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, by phone, as well as via email and video conferencing software. The Learning Support Specialist (Math/CSIS) will help monitor and communicate the progress of students, particularly those who are identified as below-level in their math and computer science skills, reach out to at-risk students, and accurately track student tutoring usage. Responsibilities also include scheduled hours in Study Tables as needed and promoting Study Tables and Learning Support/CSIS offerings with faculty and other stakeholders. Additionally, the Learning Support Specialist (Math/CSIS) will support faculty and students in math-intensive and computer science courses, including scheduled hours for in-class CSIS support. This is a part-time (up to 29 hours/week), one-year, renewable (grant-funded) position through September 30 of 2024.

This is an on-campus position with blended (virtual) responsibilities. Must be available to work on campus at Chicago and/or Wheeling five days a week for the first six months.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Tutor for general education math and computer science courses at the college level, including algebra, statistics, and math content for teachers as well as math support for major and graduate courses with substantial math components. Assist students in developing general academic skills and provide appropriate resources and learning materials for students. Monitor and maintain records on student progress and usage of tutoring services, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support at-risk students. Conduct class visits at the beginning of each term, respond to faculty alerts, and provide embedded support in online and blended courses.
  • Create and present math and CSIS-related skills workshops/webinars to support students in their math intensive and CSIS classes to help improve their academic skills.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and math coursework at the undergraduate or higher level.
  • 1-3 years of prior teaching or tutoring experience in math and computer science in diverse modalities (hybrid/blended, online). Knowledge of math and computer science instructional/tutoring practices, particularly in the areas of college math, algebra, statistics, math content for teachers, accounting and programming languages.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, Java, etc. and willingness to learn the department's curriculum.
  • Experience working with students of diverse background and abilities, especially multilingual, ELL, and multidialectal students.
