Position Summary |
This position will provide leadership in maintenance and growth of the shared analytical laboratory and teach a senior/graduate level course focused on soil and plant analyses. The position will develop, administer, collaborate and coordinate laboratory activities including training graduate students, budgeting, quality assurance and safe laboratory practices. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Knowledge in the development of analytical methods and project management as well as supervising undergraduate student workers/researchers.
- Strong laboratory background and knowledge working with chemicals and analytical equipment in a safe manner.
- Experience and interest in teaching graduate students.
- Detail-oriented, highly organized and experienced with record keeping processes as applied to laboratories.
- Strong communication (oral and written) skills.

Development and Maintenance of a Shared Analytical Laboratory:
- Maintenance and routine use of analytical equipment including ICP, AA, TOC/N, Colorimetric Autoanalyzer, CNS analyzer, etc.
- Develop budgets based on user fees to cover repair, upgrades and replacement of equipment.
- Routine troubleshooting and interactions with service teams as needed.
- Enforcement of safe laboratory and quality control/assurance practices.
- Communication of results through electronic reports.
- Assisting graduate students and faculty with the development of or modification of laboratory protocols.
- Keeping of records that include sample tracking and overall laboratory activities and productivity.

Duties/Responsibilities |
Training of Students:
- Development and teaching of a course on soil-plant analysis (2 credits) which will include laboratory techniques and safety, overview of specialized analytical equipment used in soil and plant testing laboratories, use of standards, calibration, proper laboratory techniques and laboratory record keeping.
- In addition to teaching, this position will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment used in teaching laboratories within the department and generation of data for use by departmental instructors.
- Provision of guest lectures in courses that include elements of field sampling, sample preparation and testing.
