Job Overview

The Department of Physics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in cosmology.

The successful candidate will work with Professor Jessica Muir, who is joining the department in January 2025. Prof. Muir's group will focus on research in cosmology theory, computation, and data analysis, with a particular interest in preparing for and using data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), as well as combining data from multiple cosmological probes to test the standard cosmological model. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work as part of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) as well as the Dark Energy Survey (DES).

The postdoctoral fellow will also be supported and encouraged to submit their own proposals for new projects and will have opportunities, if interested, to mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on their own research projects. This position includes funds for professional travel, publications and computing and offers a competitive salary with health benefits. The position will be a two-year appointment with an option to extend to a third year. The ideal start date is August 2025 or earlier.

Essential Functions

* Under close supervision, conceptualize and conduct research projects in cosmology theory, computation, and data analysis, with a particular interest in preparing for and using data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory LSST, as well as combining data from multiple cosmological probes to test the standard cosmological model.

* Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research.

* Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results.

* Train, teach techniques to, and mentor junior researchers.

* Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation; may assist in grant writing.

* Establish and manage collaborations with other research groups.

* Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.

* Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of appointment, must have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.
