Position Summary: JMT is currently seeking Surveying Technician I - Rodman/Instrument Operators for their Raleigh, North Carolina Offices. The successful candidate for this position may operate surveying instruments, such as conventional and Robotic Total Stations, Static and RTK/VRS GPS, and conventional and electronic levels. Position may be responsible for taking field notes, making field sketches, and entering data into data collectors and computers.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Position and hold the prism rods, or targets, that Instrument operators use for measure angles, distances, and elevations
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and Data Collectors.
  • Run levels and level rods for benchmarks and cross-section elevations
  • Search for property monuments, and other survey points
  • Set and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation
  • Operate surveying instruments such as prisms rods, Total Stations, and GPS equipment
  • Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans
  • Maintain equipment and load supplies in vehicles used by surveying crews
  • Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for line of sight, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods



Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to retain knowledge of daily routines and able apply logic and common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work in small groups
  • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

Required Experience

Preferred Experience



  • Associate's degree preferred, Field of Study: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or similar degree type or relevant experience
  • No prior experience necessary but preferred.



Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 90% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 lbs. as needed. Work will be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. The employee will be required to walk while carrying equipment in various conditions and terrains from steep slopes to swaps and congested urban areas and roadways.

Work is performed within a general office environment 10% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Anticipated travel 20% of the time.
