Position Purpose
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Education, the Associate Director of Residential Education oversees key aspects of Dartmouth's Residential Education program to develop and administer positive and engaging communities and initiatives that support successful House Communities, enhance student belonging, foster integrative learning, offer opportunities for student growth and development, and nurture students to be responsible members of the Dartmouth community. Associate Directors provide particular oversight and support of the undergraduate and graduate student recruitment/selection and training programs, and supervise staff who live on campus and execute residential education and House Community programming. May provide oversight and support of living-learning programs and academic initiatives.

This position provides the option of living on campus as units are available. Living on campus requires the Associate Director to participate in an on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • 4-6 years of progressive, relevant professional student affairs experience, preferably with a residential life focus, or the equivalent.
  • Experience supervising student staff at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate student population.
  • Demonstrated experience in programmatic leadership, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with living-learning and/or special interest programs in residence halls.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty.
  • Mature judgment, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and persuasive skills and ability to relate well and interact with students, faculty, parents and College administrators.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and expertise with organizational systems and software.
  • Ability to take initiative, balance competing demands, manage ambiguity, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Understanding of academic institutional policies and politics.
  • Very good written communication and public speaking skills.
  • Creative programming skills and strong supervisory and leadership ability.
  • Familiarity with budget administration.
  • Ability to adapt personal and professional schedule to the College's year-round calendar.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply student development theory and practice in an evolving and complex residential setting.
  • Fosters respectful communication and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs or a Counseling-related discipline, or the equivalent.
  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • Familiarity with highly selective, liberal arts institution(s).
  • Experience managing living-learning and/or special interest programs in residence halls.
  • Experience with residential curricular models.
  • Experience working in an on-call rotation supporting student crises after-hours.
  • Aptitude for use of web and social media.
  • Experience with OrgSync, StarRez, Maxient, and Excel software systems.

Supervision and Hiring -

  • Supervises, guides, trains, and evaluates several full-time residential education staff members to ensure effective implementation of the residential program.
  • Coordinates hiring, training, and role definition for live-in advisors and student employees in living learning communities.
  • Oversees graduate student staff in the House Communities.

Programmatic -

  • Develops and oversees the House Community's comprehensive living-learning programs in partnership with House Professors, Assistant Directors, Program Coordinators, and campus stakeholders to engage students in the intellectual life of the college.
  • Evaluates and implements Dartmouth's residential curriculum to ensure programmatic outcomes and alignment with other departmental and institutional programs.
  • Addresses and resolves crises, problematic student behavior, and community issues to ensure a high quality of life in the residence halls.
  • Manages budgets related to recruitment/selection, training, living-learning programs, and academic initiatives to ensure responsible fiscal stewardship in line with departmental and institutional priorities.

Leadership -

  • Represents the department as a member of the leadership team through committee membership and event participation.
  • Manages department-wide programming and policies to ensure consistency and quality across the residential communities in alignment with the departmental mission and vision.
  • Oversees the departmental inclusivity and diversity plan, ensuring best practices to maximize inclusion and diversity in the residence halls.
  • Collaborates with the Undergraduate Housing Office, Residential Operations, and program staff to ensure housing assignment processes, opening and closing initiatives, and facilities support program goals and student needs.

Note: There are two Associate Directors for the department. One Associate Director will be responsible for overseeing the training of graduate/undergraduate staff, while the other will focus on the selection process.
