Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is currently seeking an HVAC Specialist to work in our Facilities department. This position performs journey-level HVAC work in the installation, repair, maintenance and operation of ventilation, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning equipment and energy management systems.

Essential Functions

40% - Performs journeyman level installation, maintenance and repairs on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment to include preventative and reactive maintenance. Operates the chilled water plant and adjusts the run schedule as required. Performs industrial water tests and uses the results to adjust the chemical feed rates or draws conclusions to look for problems with the operation of the plant

30% - Uses the building automation system (BAS) to troubleshoot problems on the central plant and individual building support systems. Programs building start/off times for special activity rooms or off-hour occupancy

20% - Provides assistance with contractor performed projects and verifies specifications are met and quality of work is acceptable. Reviews drawings to ensure programmed work is code compliant and sustainable. Assists other crafts as directed

10% - Estimates material costs and provides estimates for in-house and contractor performed installation, maintenance and repairs on HVAC equipment. Other duties as assigned commensurate to the grade level of the position

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience performing HVAC work equivalent to journey-level.

OR

An Associate's degree or certificate in an HVAC discipline, or a related field, from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized HVAC vocational program and two (2) years of work experience related to the described duties of this position.

OR

High School Diploma or GED and the successful completion of a recognized four (4) year HVAC apprenticeship program.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

There is no substitution or equivalency allowable for the High School Diploma or GED.

Desired Qualifications

A. Experience using an energy management system to operate a chilled water system
B. Experience with a central plant in a large complex of 1,000 tons or more (list tonnage on resume)
C. Experience performing routine inspections and preventative maintenance
D. Experience performing new installation

    motions.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently,
    and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the
    human body.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent
    exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.);

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
  1. Journey level card/license may be required
  2. Possession of a valid Arizona Driver License (Class D) may be required for some assignments
  3. May require HVAC certifications associated with assignment

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment within the classification. Licenses and certifications may be subject to renewal and/or require Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or training by the State or issuing authority.

Preferred: Experience with commercial and/or central plant HVAC systems
