Sepsis and Stroke Coordinator

The Sepsis/Stroke Coordinator provides oversight and coordination of all elements of the Sepsis/Stroke Program at ARMC. Under the guidance and supervision of the QOM Director, responsibilities include the planning, organizing, and evaluation of patient care within the program as well as compliance with regulatory bodies and national guidelines for sepsis/stroke management. This position helps to develop and maintain high quality, evidence-based care through education and training. This position supports the sepsis & stroke team and maintains a strong component of patient/family advocacy with day to day review and coordination of multidisciplinary services. The Sepsis/Stroke Coordinator may participate on assigned hospital and medical committees. Demonstrates service excellence at all times. Other duties as assigned.

Duties:

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate and implement the hospital's mission, vision and values as well as departmental goals.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to sepsis & Stroke team members and staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management and outcome achievement.
  • Assesses the level of competence of staff and contributes to staff evaluations as related to stroke and/or sepsis and as requested by director on or prior to due date. Recommends action for those scores less than satisfactory level of performance and identifies and recognizes staff with performance above expected level.
  • Integrates sepsis & stroke services with hospital's primary functions and works with other departments to create systems and problem solve ongoing issues to improve patient care delivery and successfully accomplish departmental/organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of regulations and national best practice guidelines for Sepsis and Stroke care as applicable to patient care and other departmental/organizational functions and assures regular review, development, implementation, and regulatory compliance of policies and procedures.
  • Recommends patient education materials for Sepsis and Stroke Program.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the education of staff. Develops strategies to promote staff development and competency assessment as related to sepsis and stroke care.
  • Collaborates with Nursing and hospital leadership to achieve strategic goals.
  • Seeks opportunity to adopt best practice, eliminate duplication and maximize efficiency.
  • Coordinates quality monitoring and performance improvement program for Sepsis and Stroke program in collaboration with Medical Director, CNO, Nursing Directors and Director of Risk Management. Oversees integrity of data entry into national database for American Stroke Association and prepares reports and trends data outcomes. Recommends and evaluates effectiveness of performance improvement plans as appropriate.
  • Sets a developmental climate by striving to improve the skills of others by role modeling and providing education and clear performance feedback and coaching as related to stroke care . Promotes and encourages professional growth and development and staff involvement in decision making.
  • Adapts to changes in the work environment successfully managing competing demands and demonstrating resiliency and flexibility. Balances team and individual responsibilities.
  • Supports professional practice and workflow, recommending space/equipment and other resources needed by the Sepsis and Stroke programs.
  • Seeks new program strategies or enhancements which would expand market share and support patient satisfaction.
  • Works together with inpatient units, ancillary services and ED to ensure patient needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Co-leads Sepsis and Stroke Steering Committee with medical director and other committees as assigned. Reports progress and data outcomes to relevant interest groups as assigned.
  • Assists with development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide/support the sepsis and stroke programs and reflect state of the art practice in collaboration with Medical Director.
  • Provides community outreach education and program support with Marketing to fulfill our mission as related to the Sepsis and Stroke programs.
  • Provides support with orientation and training as related to the sepsis and stroke program for relevant staff including ED and Stroke unit staff to meet job expectations and competencies .
  • Provides collaboratively with other team members patient and family education to meet identified learning needs as related to sepsis and stroke.
  • Works effectively with local emergency medical services and responders in collaboration with Director Emergency Services to promote positive outcomes and customer service.
  • Contributes to overall organization goals and interdisciplinary collaborative initiatives.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Education requirements: Graduate of an accredited or NLN approved RN program. BSN preferred.

Work experience requirements: Minimum three years of experience in neurosurgical, critical care or emergency nursing.

Required licenses/ certifications/courses BLS required (or obtained during orientation). Advanced Stroke Life Support Health Care Instructor certification preferred. Current SC nursing license.

Required skills, knowledge and abilities: Program development, management skills, and familiarity with regulatory and accrediting agency standards.
