Job Summary

The Supervisor, Servers will lead the Server team in the configuration and operation of Infrastructure Services servers. The Supervisor, Servers leads the Servers team in working with a broad range of customers, partners, and key University stakeholders to provide best-in-class system administration services and is responsible for implementation and operations activities. This role involves leading the team in deployment, configuration, and day-to-day operations of centralized, distributed, physical, hypervisor and virtual servers to ensure stability and security. The Supervisor, Servers makes certain that critical issues are tracked, managed, and escalated appropriately and facilitates effective issue resolution in a timely manner.

The Supervisor, Servers will positively impact University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University's mission. The Supervisor, Servers will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not only for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 5 to 7+ years of Experience working in one or more of the following fields: information technology, infrastructure services, server administration.
  • 1 to 3+ years Experience in managing a team of technical professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of information technology, platform services, or server administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with supervising the installation, configuration, and modification of Windows and Linux operating systems and virtualization technologies such as hypervisors. An understanding of Linux, Windows, and cloud platform automation and orchestration methodologies and tools.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to triage and escalate to leadership and management for resolution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate technical information and ideas to diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects.
  • Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
  • Familiarity with budget planning and management, business case development, and service management.
  • Proven ability to interpret, analyze, and apply pertinent service-level agreements, policies, procedures, regulations, and other requirements and turn them into actionable outcomes.
  • Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Proficiency in key Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies and principles.
  • Knowledge of IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or equivalent., and management of infrastructure components.
  • Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; ability to scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines.
  • Ability to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Ability to think creatively and propose innovative ideas, including the incorporation of new technologies or processes.
  • Ability to work with agility in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Baseline knowledge of networking concepts, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP), routing, firewalls, and network security.
  • Baseline knowledge of and experience in migrating server workloads to platforms, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure.
  • Baseline knowledge of infrastructure automation tools and techniques, such as DevOps.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Project Management Institute (PMI) Certification or equivalent
  • Server Certification (Microsoft, Red Hat)
