Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide relevant Substance Abuse information for class curriculum
  • Facilitate didactic educational presentations, group counseling, and individual counseling sessions
  • Select and recommend new instructional materials and programs for use in the substance abuse program
  • Maintain knowledge of new developments in the field of substance abuse
  • Maintain a collegian relationship with other substance abuse professionals, programs, and associations
  • Complete required testing, assessment, and psychosocial history on incoming residents as required
  • Participate in related training for substance abuse

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes comprehensive assessment of inmates' substance abuse history and treatment requirements and develops individualized treatment plan. Document all assessment and treatment planning in DAP format.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor will be assigned to either Intensive Outpatient, Outpatient, Prevention or Therapeutic Community depending on operational needs
  • This position will carry a caseload of clients
  • Thru a Cognitive Behavior Treatment approach...presents individual counseling/educational lectures and didactic presentations weekly based on the areas of Relapse Prevention, Anger Management, Parenting skills, Life Skills, Criminal & Addictive Behaviors, and Co-occurring disorders.
  • Facilitates individual sessions, educational classes, and groups, using principles of the "What Works" system. Documents participants' attendance, participation and progress in Company database.
  • Conducts risk/need assessments and creates individual treatment plans for each assigned participant. Meets regularly with participants and documents participants' progress or regress according to F.S 65D-30 in a Clinical File.
  • Maintains accurate clinical documentation including intake summaries, group notes, discharge summaries, treatment plans and updates. Updates therapeutic logs in a timely manner. Enters pertinent information into Clinical File according to F.S 65D-30
  • Ensures that participants' records are accurately completed in a timely manner according to F.S 65D-30 .
  • Identifies problem areas that may impact participants' ability to successfully complete treatment. Guides participants to develop strategies to overcome obstacles to successful completion of treatment.
  • Will maintain a caseload capacity of participants as per F.S 65D-30 specific to the level of care assigned, i.e., Intensive Outpatient, Outpatient, Prevention, Therapeutic Community.
  • Utilizes crisis intervention techniques if an emergency arises
  • Utilizes conflict resolution strategies
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • A High School diploma/GED and six (6) years of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling OR
    • An associate degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; OR
    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in any of the social sciences and six (6) months of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in any unrelated area of study and one (1) year of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; OR
    • Certified Addictions Professional (CAP), Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJAP), Certified Associate Addictions Professional (CAAP), Certified Criminal Justice Associate Addictions Professional (CCJAAP); OR
    • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in any of the social sciences; and six (6) months of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; OR
    • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in any unrelated area of study; and one (1) year of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling.
  • Preference given to experience within a correctional setting.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
