The Art Program in the Bower School of Music & the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Drawing.
The Bower School of Music & the Arts currently offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art as well as minors in both art and art history. The Mission of the Art Program is to educate students and the community in the creation and appreciation of the visual arts; emphasize the importance of context in art history and contemporary culture; provide students with a clear sense of direction towards a career in the creative industries; and teach art with a lively awareness of both global perspectives and local responsibilities.
As an Assistant Professor of Drawing you will teach a range of courses serving undergraduate students in the B.A. Art degree program; be closely involved with curriculum development at the course and program level; participate in program and departmental meetings; advance personal research/creative scholarship agenda; and pursue service opportunities to the University and community. It is expected that this faculty member will evolve the curriculum to respond to contemporary developments in art and actively assist with recruitment and retention of art students.

Job Description Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Develop and teach a range of undergraduate courses and collaborate on curriculum development at the course and program level.
- Hold office hours.

- Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students.
- Engages in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.
- Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments.
- Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.
- Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.
- Attends faculty and college meetings as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.
- Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.
- Work collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff in the Art Program, the Bower School of Music & the Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
- Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours. Mentor students in in developing creative works and finding vocational pathways as part of a socially and culturally engaged academic and regional community.
- Perform regular scholarly research and publication
Additional Job Description Required Qualifications
- MFA in Studio Art or related fields from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
- Two years college/university teaching experience beyond the graduate assistant level with a demonstrated commitment to quality undergraduate education.
- Demonstrated experience teach a range of studio classes including drawing foundations and figure drawing.
- Demonstrated teaching experience in digital arts and personal studio experience using digital media.
- Demonstrated experience with current and emerging practices in the development of art foundations curriculum.
- Active record of exhibitions and professional engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- MFA in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking or related two-dimensional disciplines
- Two years full-time college/university teaching experience in Foundations Drawing, upper-level Figure Drawing and Digital Arts.
- Broad-based expertise in modern and contemporary issues in art and design with a vision for integrating digital skills in studio art practice.
- Demonstrated experience with course and curriculum development for B.A. Art or B.F.A. degree programs.
- Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and online curriculum delivery.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills with an understanding of program and institutional assessment strategies.
- Demonstrated experience with and commitment to collegial and collaborative engagement with faculty and students.
- An established record of excellence in creative practice that supports the student population and the university educational environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).
- Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals.
- Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.
- Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
- Ability to teach in multiple delivery modalities (i.e., face-to-face, hybrid, blendflex, and online).
- Ability to teach art courses at the undergraduate level in response to current program needs including Foundations Drawing, Figure Drawing, Digital Arts, and/or specific areas of specialization.
- Ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the excellence of The Bower School of Music and the Arts.
