Academic Technologist

Position Purpose & Summary:

The Academic Technologist contributes to the work of the University's Curriculum & Instruction Center by providing critical front-line support for the use of the University's academic technologies, including the core learning management system (currently D2L Brightspace). This position monitors for and resolves technical issues with academic technologies and proactively creates training materials to support effective teaching and learning through the University's official academic technologies. This position develops and manages courses and learning objects in the learning management system.

Essential Duties of the Position:

Technical support and documentation

Provides front-line support for the University's core learning management system and related academic technologies. Collaborates with IT Help Desk and other departments in effectively resolving technical issues in a timely manner. Collaborates in developing and presenting training materials and workshops to support effective teaching and learning. Ensures that technical issues, tasks, and projects are tracked in the University's ticketing and project management systems. Contributes to developing and the upkeep of clear documentation related to academic technologies and their use.

Course development

Designs and builds courses as needed per University policies and design standards. Contributes to the creation and maintenance of course materials and other resources. Advocates for the creation and use of accessible course materials and resources. Serves as an in-house expert on the effective use of academic technology.

System management

Contributes to the system management aspects of the University's learning management system, including loading course and user data, creating course shells, copying courses, and user management. Collaborates with vendor support contacts and other external partners. Contributes to developing standardized processes and procedures for efficiently managing courses and course data. Works with other departments to ensure interrelated systems are securely and effectively integrated with the learning management system.

Education & Experience:


  • Required: Experience providing direct technical support to users, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Preferred: Experience using, creating, and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated ability to provide training, both in-person and online.
  • Preferred: BA/BS degree in IT management, educational technology, computer science, or similar field of study.
  • Preferred: Experience with common learning management systems, such as D2L Brightspace, Anthology Blackboard, and/or Instructure Canvas.
